Maribo between Lakes, Monastic Culture and Nature Experiences

Maribo is located in the heart of Maribosøerne Nature Park. The nature park is a protected natural area and shapes the character of the town, along with the lake landscape, historic buildings and the many paths through the surrounding area. Nature between lakes and shores

The Maribo Lakes are an EU Special Protection Area and a Ramsar site. White-tailed eagles have successfully bred at the Maribo Lakes every year since 1997. Naturskolen in Maribo provides direct access to special natural areas: eight hectares of publicly accessible natural land are available along the lakeshore.

The 200-metre-long sensory trail at Naturskolen leads through varied terrain. Fallen trees, gnarled branches and viewpoints are part of its route. One unusual station is the sacrificial bog with skulls and bones. The trail therefore appeals not only to walkers who want to observe nature, but also to visitors looking for different impressions within a short distance.

Water experiences on Søndersø

Fishing is permitted at the jetty at Naturskolen in Søndersø. For further activities on the water, Maribo Kano offers canoes, kayaks, boats and SUP boards for hire on the lakes of Maribosøerne Nature Park.

Monastic culture and museum history

Maribo Cathedral was originally built in the 15th century as part of a double monastery. In the cathedral, you can see Leonora Christina’s gravestone and the crypt with her coffin. At Stiftsmuseet, the OMG exhibition (Oh My God) displays unique medieval crucifixes. The Lola exhibition at Stiftsmuseet in Maribo also presents a Stone Age girl who lived around 5,700 years ago.

At the open-air museum De Gamle Huse, visitors can play old village games or take part in the Frilandsquizzen. The “Craftsman for a Day” activity provides an introduction to tasks such as whitewashing, weaving fences or plastering with clay in the traditional manner. Group events at De Gamle Huse may also include a tasting of old local dishes from the region.

Routes, railways and unusual landmarks

The heritage railway offers an 8-kilometre scenic journey from Maribo to Bandholm. For a longer round trip, the 41-kilometre “Skov, kyst og vin” route starts and ends at Maribo railway station. The monastery ruins are about a 10-minute walk from Maribo railway station. Bangshaveskoven is also home to the 5-metre-tall forest troll Frie Vilje, created by artist Thomas Dambo from recycled materials.

Spiritual and literary themes are also part of the townscape. Klosterruten is one of two modern pilgrimage routes that cross in Maribo. Pilgrimshuset is a hub for hiking routes connecting nature, monasteries, churches and manor houses. A walk following in the footsteps of Kaj Munk, who was born in the town, also leads through Maribo.
