Nysted between harbour, beach and cultural experiences

Nysted harbour is situated in a scenic setting on the south coast of Lolland, at the end of Nysted Nor. The town is characterised by winding streets and idyllic houses; from the atmospheric harbour, you can see Aalholm Castle. Beaches and trails around Nysted

Nysted Beach has shallow, calm water and a beautiful seabed. It is particularly suitable for small children. The beach has a beach volleyball net, a bathing jetty, toilets and changing facilities. This makes it possible to combine relaxing hours by the water with simple beach activities.

The Rundt om Nysted circular route is a 7-kilometre cultural and nature trail around Nysted. The paths have grass or gravel surfaces; along a short section, the route follows a public road. The route is not suitable for wheelchairs. The different lengths of the trails provide a clear point of reference when comparing a short walk, a literary tour or a longer cycling trip.

The Danske Digterruter route in Nysted is 5.2 kilometres long and includes 10 audio stations. It follows in the footsteps of the poet Emil Aarestrup's sources of inspiration, passing the poet's house, the old streets and the harbour; along the way, it offers views of Aalholm Castle.

For longer active days, the nature-rich Oldtidsruten route is a central attraction: The 25-kilometre cycling route starts in Nysted and passes more than 150 prehistoric monuments. An eastern canoe and kayak route starts at Nysted Rowing Club, passes Skansen and Holten Beach, circles a small island and returns to Nysted.

Churches, museums and architectural history

Nysted Church is a typical town church with high, beautiful and bright vaulted ceilings. It has four bells: the oldest dates from the 14th century, while the newest dates from 1699. The church organ has a facade by Daniel Wroblewski from 1777; it was later rebuilt and extended. The Franciscan monastery in Nysted was founded in 1286.

Nysted Water Tower was built in 1912 and stored water for the town of Nysted and the surrounding farms. It is one of the earliest reinforced-concrete water towers, was restored in 2009 and now serves as a meeting place in the town.

Aarestrup's House Museum shows how a middle-class home was furnished in the 1830s. The museum's own collection includes several pieces of furniture belonging to Emil Aarestrup, including his doctor's and poet's chair.

For planning purposes, the current status of the Nysted Organ Museum is important: It has been closed since 20 June 2026; no further concerts, tours or other activities take place there. The collection comprises 16 Danish church organs. These include playable, historically valuable church organs from the 19th and 20th centuries.

Aalholm Castle is considered one of Denmark's best-preserved medieval castles. In addition, several houses in Nysted retain half-timbering from the 17th and 18th centuries. The townscape therefore brings together harbour views, older residential buildings, ecclesiastical architecture and sites of cultural and historical interest.
