Sakskøbing by the Fjord: Cycling Route, Nature and Historic Town

At the end of Sakskøbing Fjord

Sakskøbing lies at the end of Sakskøbing Fjord. The fjord is a calm, varied waterway and is suitable for rowing. Meadows, woodland and fields surround Sakskøbing Fjord. The waterway gives the town a maritime character that blends with the open landscapes around the fjord.

Cycling route and getting there

The “Rundt om Sakskøbing” cycling route runs for 17 kilometres along Sakskøbing Fjord and through extensive manor landscapes. The route combines the waterside course with the rural surroundings, while its length gives the cycling excursion a clear structure.

“Rundt om Sakskøbing” is designed as a circular route: the start and finish are at Sakskøbing harbour. The route is signposted exclusively clockwise. The prescribed direction of travel is therefore part of planning the tour. For planning the day, the route length and mandatory direction of travel are practical parameters. Sakskøbing can also be reached by train and bus; bicycles can be taken along, allowing the journey to be combined with the cycling excursion. The harbour is thus a shared starting point for the cycling route and the waterway.

Fjord, canal and birdlife

The harbour is the starting point for a narrow, marked navigable canal. The canal is four kilometres long and leads from Sakskøbing harbour to a landing place near Oreby Slot and Oreby Mølle. The canal complements the fjord, which is suitable for rowing, with a narrow waterway.

At Sakskøbing Fjord, the Danish Ornithological Society has recorded 70 bird species in the “DOF-basen” database. In addition to the waterway, meadows, woodland and fields form part of the landscape around the fjord.

Church, water tower and places of remembrance

Sakskøbing Church is a medieval church in the market town of Sakskøbing. Its choir and nave date from the 13th century, while the tower dates from the 15th century. Its construction history therefore spans the period from the 13th to the 15th century. Services, church ceremonies, church coffee gatherings and concerts take place in the church.

One of the distinctive Sakskøbing landmarks is Saxine: the 33-metre-high water tower is the town’s landmark. Another place of remembrance is the sculpture “Roepigerne”, which was erected in Sakskøbing in 1940 in memory of Polish immigrants. The courtyard of Hotel Saxkjøbing has also been opened to the public.

Beer, baking and fruit festival

Krenkerup Bryggeri brews beer from pure raw ingredients without additives and grows its own grain for this purpose. Sakskøbing Madhus offers baking and cooking courses for people of all ages. At Krenkerup Bryggeri, beer production using its own grain is the focus, while at Madhus, the focus is on baking and cooking.

Sydhavsøernes Frugtfestival is Denmark’s largest fruit festival and has welcomed visitors of all ages since 2008. In addition to the brewery and the courses, the fruit festival provides another culinary focus. The topics therefore range from beer and grain to baking and cooking, and on to fruit.
