Järna
Järna is particularly suitable for a trip where hiking trails, cultural landscapes and special places by the water come together. The approximately 13 km-long Ekoleden connects Ytterjärna with nearby gardens, agricultural areas, forests and the Baltic Sea coastal area. When choosing your accommodation, the key question is therefore whether you would like to combine longer stretches of trail or shorter nature and cultural destinations.
Hiking trails between the town, forest and coast
The Kustleden is 14 km long and runs between the Farstanäs Nature Reserve and Skillebyholm. Along the way, it passes, among other places, Pilkrogsviken, Ytterjärna Church and the Kulturcentrum. In the wider area around Järna, Farstanäs has three marked walking trails: Strandstigen is 2.7 km long, Skogsstigen 3.5 km and Paradisstigen 2.3 km.
The Moraån Valley Nature Reserve borders the southern edge of the built-up area. A flat, blue-marked trail of approximately 4.3 km runs there, with several benches for resting. A yellow-marked trail runs 2.2 km along the gorge. Information boards about flora, fauna and cultural heritage, as well as maps of the trails, help put the landscape into context. The Moraåns naturreservat Nature Reserve is also characterized by rainforest-like nature.
Logsjön is also close to the town, in the northeast of Järna. From Järna railway station, the natural area can be reached on foot via a route of approximately 500 m. Logsjörundan has several benches for resting, as well as footbridges and reinforced sections leading through wet and muddy parts of the trail. For a shorter loop, there is the marked Nibblerundan: it is 2 km long and takes approximately 30 minutes. The different lengths and trail characteristics make it possible to choose specifically between a short loop, a flat trail and a longer route through the landscape.
Cultural sites with their own character
Överjärna Church, built in the 12th century, is centrally located in Järna. From the oldest Ytterjärna Church, the lower part of the tower and the structure of the westernmost bay of the nave have been preserved. The architectural surroundings of Ytterjärna are also distinctive: organic forms, natural materials, light and colours define their appearance.
Skyspace is a light installation designed by James Turrell, featuring a white dome open to the sky. From 30 minutes before sunset until 60 to 90 minutes afterwards, visitors can observe changing colours in the sky. Kulturhuset i Ytterjärna was inaugurated in 1992. It is a cultural centre with a wide-ranging programme; its good acoustics make it a suitable concert hall. Tickets for Kulturhuset can be booked online around the clock. At the box office, they are available one hour before events or during reception opening hours.
KulturMat restaurant and café is part of Kulturhuset and is open Monday to Sunday from 10:00 to 16:00. Another historical trace is Vita huset: the villa, built around the turn of the century, was constructed in 1905 by the artist Bruno Liljefors, who moved into it with his wife.
Orientation for planning your trip
There are good cycle paths between Järna railway station and Ytterjärna. The Stensta bus stop is 600 m from the reception of Ytterjärna Kulturcentrum on the Kustleden. The Yttereneby Nature Reserve in the area around Järna can also be reached by bus. At the headland known as »Kärleksudden«, there is a natural bathing spot as well as two equipped barbecue areas with woodsheds and seating.
Skillebyholm offers full-time and part-time training in horticulture and cultivation, as well as shorter courses. The shop at Nibble Handelsträdgård mainly stocks the farms’ own products, along with a selection of wholesale goods. Thus, in addition to hiking and culture, horticulture and regional produce also contribute to the picture of Järna, without the individual offerings having to be combined into a single visit programme.
