Prichaly lies at the mouth of the Promyslovaya River (Inse Fließ) where it flows into the Curonian Lagoon. The former Inse was later renamed Prichaly. Its historical connection to the water is most evident in its fishing; church and architectural traces add to this maritime focus. For travelers choosing a place not only for its location but also for its history, two themes are particularly easy to grasp: the former work on the lagoon and the development of the village over several centuries.

Fishing and Kurenas

Fishing was for a long time the main occupation and source of income for the inhabitants of historic Inse. Fishermen went out onto the Curonian Lagoon in sailboats or rowboats; fishing from motorized boats was prohibited. In the past, many fishermen from Inse crossed the lagoon in kurenas. A kurenas was the single-masted fishing flat-bottomed boat typical of the area, known in German as a Kurenkahn. These boats were built of oak and could be up to 14 meters long. These features make the Kurenkahn a clearly identifiable type of boat and show how closely historical fishing was connected with journeys across the lagoon.

Church history and historical references to the village

The Inse parish was founded in 1570. The Inse church was independent until 1684; after that, it became a branch church of the Kallningken parish (Prokhladnoye). A second Inse church was built in 1700 in the center of the village by the water. The wooden, octagonal building had a small tower on the ridge of its roof. The church was still standing after the Second World War and was used for economic purposes; it was demolished with tractors in 1964. The dates 1570 and 1684 relate to the church's status, while the year 1700 marks a specific building, whose later use and demolition are also part of the village's history.

The cultural and historical picture of Prichaly also includes preserved old fishermen's houses and a pre-war cemetery. Together with fishing and church history, these provide different points of reference to the village: residential buildings, a burial site, church organization, and former work on the lagoon.

Natural areas and trails in Kaliningrad Oblast

For nature enthusiasts, Kaliningrad Oblast offers a broader context of its own. The Curonian Spit is a sandy peninsula 98 kilometers long and 350 meters to 3.8 kilometers wide. As a natural barrier, it separates the salty Baltic Sea from the fresh water of the Curonian Lagoon. The Curonian Spit National Park has seven ecological nature trails and a visitor center.

The Fringilla eco-trail runs through the grounds of the Rybachy Biological Station's field station. From April to October, visits are only possible as part of a guided tour with at least ten people. The named eco-trails include Königsforst near kilometer 6, Müllerhöhe at kilometer 32, Rossittener Wald at kilometer 33, Tanzender Wald at kilometer 37, Efa-Höhe at kilometer 42, and Schwanensee at kilometer 45. These six trails are accessible around the clock year-round; they may be temporarily closed due to weather or necessary restoration work. The distinction is useful for planning a trip: Fringilla requires a seasonal group tour, while the six trails may be temporarily closed. Check the park's current notices before visiting.
