Borgholm – Castle History, Gardens and Nature
Borgholm combines documented castle history with garden and nature experiences by the sea. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay featuring cultural impressions, walks and active routes, Borgholms slott, Solliden Palace Park and Borga hage Nature Reserve offer different points of reference for choosing where to stay. Historic buildings, a town museum and an annual festival also shape the character of the town.
Castle History and Historic Sites
Borgholms slott has stood for 900 years on a rocky ridge overlooking the Kalmarsund strait. The prominent location connects the history of the building with a specifically documented view over the water. Another historic point of reference is Borgholms kyrka, which was consecrated in 1879 in the Neo-Romanesque style. The Neo-Romanesque church complements the castle site with a historic point of reference from the 19th century.
Traces of S:t Elavi kapell have been preserved in the old part of Borgholm Cemetery. They appear as a slightly raised rectangular area, making an earlier structural feature visible within the present-day cemetery grounds. Borgholms Stadsmuseum is located on an estate with roots dating back to the early 19th century. Borgholm therefore brings together several different forms of historical remembrance: a castle, a church, cemetery traces and a museum on an older estate.
Gardens and Nature by the Sea
For garden enthusiasts, Solliden Palace Park is a point of interest in its own right. In 2026, the park is scheduled to be open daily from 7 May to 27 September.
In Borga hage (Slottsskogen), you can walk through lush deciduous woodland, along flowering meadows and by the sea. Borga hage and Slottsskogen refer to the same area. More than 100 rare species have been recorded in the area. Borga hage Nature Reserve is accessible from Borgholm via Strandvägen from the north. Those who do not want to experience nature only on foot can use an approximately 1.5-kilometre route in Borga hage from Borgholms idrottsplats for hiking, running and cycling. The approximate length refers to this route in Borga hage.
A Festive Date on the Town Calendar
The Victoriakonserten is an annual tribute to H.R.H. Crown Princess Victoria on her birthday, 14 July. The celebration at Borgholms slott includes performances by renowned artists, the presentation of the Victoriapriset and a fundraising collection for Crown Princess Victoria's Fund. The royal procession from Solliden through the centre of Borgholm to Borgholms slott also leads to the Victoriakonserten. The procession runs from Solliden through the centre to the castle.
