Emmaboda between the Kingdom of Glass, nature and historic trails
The municipality of Emmaboda is part of the Kingdom of Glass. In the region, visitors can experience glassmaking in operation and buy glass directly from the production facilities. At the same time, the landscape includes forests, lakes, wetlands and agricultural land in a changing forest mosaic shaped by human use.
The regional selection also includes Eriksmåla and Långasjö.
Culture and glass
The Glass Factory is an experience-oriented glass museum in the Kingdom of Glass. Its collection includes around 40,000 glass objects by approximately 50 artists. The collections originate, among other places, from the Boda, Kosta and Åfors glassworks. Exhibitions, lectures, happenings, glass shows, theatre performances and workshops are part of the museum’s programme.
Emmaboda Konst also demonstrates the connection between art and glass: it features international art, art glass from the Målerås glassworks and illuminated glass panels. Special exhibitions, lectures and individual group tours can also be arranged. The Johansfors Gallery is located in the former director’s villa at Johansfors glassworks and displays historic and contemporary art glass, including works by Kjell Engman, Vicke Lindstrand, Göran Wärff and Bertil Vallien.
Erikshyttan is one of the municipality’s two glassworks that produce and sell glass on site. At Algutsboda Church, an electronic multilingual guide to the church’s history is available in English, German and Swedish; there are also recordings of choral singing and a pilgrims’ service.
History and literature
Duvemåla is associated with Vilhelm Moberg’s grandmother, who was born in 1833, and inspired him to create the character Kristina in the emigrant novels. A visit to Rundqvistagården in Duvemåla conveys an impression of an earlier time when self-sufficiency was part of everyday life.
The Emmaboda Hembygdsgård on Bökön preserves a 19th-century dwelling house as well as other relocated historic buildings. These include a hay barn, an 18th-century barn, a mill building, a log cabin and a detention room. Moshultamåla old school is now a museum with a furnished classroom and a collection about Vilhelm Moberg’s literary work.
Klasatorpet was a filming location for Jan Troell’s adaptation of “The Emigrants”; Kristina’s swing from the filming is in the barn. Långasjö Church contains remains of a medieval stone church from the 13th century. A small museum displays objects from the former church and the old parish library.
Vissefjärda Church has an altarpiece painted by Pehr Hörberg in 1795. On the church island opposite, there is a walking path and a quiet place for prayer.
Nature along the Lyckebyån
The municipality of Emmaboda has three state nature reserves representing valuable cultural landscapes, hay meadows and valleys. One nature reserve combines deciduous woodland on former arable land with preserved open areas and clearance cairns from earlier cultivation.
The Lidahult Nature Reserve preserves a traditionally managed hay meadow. Its annual mowing supports flowers, butterflies and other small animals. Around Emmaboda, numerous inland lakes and the Lyckebyån offer opportunities for swimming.
The Lyckebyån valley runs through the municipality of Emmaboda. Paths and roads followed this valley, and archaeological traces attest to settlements along the river since the Stone Age.
Routes on foot, by bicycle and by road
Hälsans stig is an approximately 5 km long, easily accessible loop through Emmaboda and Lindås. The kilometres are marked with signs, and overview maps are provided along the route. Walkers and runners can start and finish at any point.
KulTuren is a scenic route 14 Swedish miles long through the municipalities of Emmaboda and Lessebo. Utvandrarleden is approximately 120 km long and passes through the municipalities of Emmaboda, Lessebo and Tingsryd.
Utvandrarleden can be used as a hiking, cycling, car and motorcycle route. Multi-day packages with accommodation and bicycle rental can be booked for the route. A historic walk through Emmaboda begins at the railway station by the tourist information office.
Transport and events
Emmaboda has train and bus connections. Air transport is also accessible within a radius of 60 km. Every year, the motorsport events “En dag på strippen”, “End of summer power meet” and “Skog & Traktormässan” take place at Emmaboda Flygbana.
North of Emmaboda, the approximately 40-hectare Sträva activity and recreation area close to residential areas is being developed.
