Nybro: Nature, Glass History and Swimming Opportunities

Nybro combines a distinctive glassmaking history with nature reserves, trails through varied landscapes and several opportunities for bathing and swimming. If you would like to combine experiences in nature, culture or activities by the water during your trip, the town offers various ways to do so.

Glass Art and Design in Pukeberg

An important cultural point of reference is the Pukeberg glassworks. It was founded in 1871 by Conrad Nyström, one of the master glassblowers at the Kosta glassworks. The Designarkivet is also located on the former Pukeberg glassworks site. Seasonal exhibitions are held there. The collection comprises around 120,000 archival items from approximately 800 designers and companies, providing a comprehensive insight into design history.

At Ateljéhus Pukeberg, visits to individual artists in their studios are possible following direct contact. The cultural offering is complemented by two public artworks: “Bro och breja” by Bertil Vallien was inaugurated in 1970, while “Glas i centrum” by Vicke Lindstrand was inaugurated in 1968.

Nature Areas and Trails Around Nybro

The Svartbäcksmåla Nature Reserve covers 345 hectares and frames the southern parts of Nybro. Its landscape was shaped by the Ice Age and encompasses a variety of natural environments. The Svartbäcksmåla activity area has mountain biking trails, hiking and riding trails, as well as a disc golf course. From central Nybro, the nature reserve can be reached via footpaths and cycle paths through the Pukeberg glassworks site.

The Rismåla Nature Reserve is also located near Nybro. From the town centre, you can reach it via a footpath and cycle path or via the car park at Desemålavägen. The area has several shorter trails and an accessible route. Walks lead to Rismåla göl; the area also offers opportunities for swimming and fishing, as well as experiences in nature.

For a short stay within the town, Svartegöl is a good option. The park in central Nybro is suitable for walks, birdwatching and picnics. This provides both larger natural areas with a variety of trails and a central park for quieter activities.

Bathing Spots, Swimming Pool and Badhusparken

The Linneasjön bathing spot on Strandvägen is centrally located in Nybro. It has been adapted for accessibility and offers good access to the jetty and water ramp. During the bathing season, toilets are available, including an accessible toilet. Anyone who wants to swim independently of a bathing spot can bathe, swim lengths and take swimming lessons at Nybro simhall. The facilities also include a 38-degree hot tub.

Badhusparken also reflects the town’s bathing tradition. Its history dates back to 1883, when wooden buildings were erected there for bathing and relaxation. At Badhusparken, people also drank from a spring containing iron-rich water. The different places illustrate that water in Nybro appears both as a current leisure theme and as part of the town’s history.
