Påskallavik: Harbour, Art and Local History

Påskallavik combines harbour and local history with public art. Art and Churches on the Coast

Källströmsgården was the home and workplace of the artist Arvid Källström for 30 years. Many of Arvid Källström’s sculptures can be seen in his garden. From June to August, the association organises exhibitions at Källströmsgården. This gives the site a clear connection to art alongside its historical significance, without reducing the individual works to a single style or period.

Påskallavik Church was built between 1862 and 1865 on the initiative of, and with generous donations from, the brothers Erik and Nils Callerström. One special detail is the baptismal font from 1925: it is made of granite and recalls Påskallavik’s quarrying era. Arvid Källström is also connected with the church building. The west tower and what many regard as the main entrance were created by him in 1925. In addition, Gästgiveriet, a well-preserved red-painted building with historic roots, represents another visible facet of the area’s history.

Harbour, Trade and Maritime Traces

Påskallavik developed into a small centre of trade and shipping. From the mid-19th century, the Callerströmska warehouse in the harbour was used during Påskallavik’s major industrial and shipbuilding era. This historical context makes the harbour an important point of reference if you want to view the area’s development not only through individual buildings but also through its economic past.

The harbour entrance also has an unusual connection to art: Arvid Källström’s “Röde Gubben” stands on a small island at the entrance to Påskallavik harbour. The guest harbour in Påskallavik offers berths for visiting boats. In this way, historical use, maritime orientation and a distinctive work of art come together in a compact thematic setting.

Trails and Activity

Anyone wishing to combine cultural history with a trail experience can consider the Stenhuggarleden as a destination in its own right. It extends from Näset in the north to Påskallavik in the south.

The Elljusspåret is 2.0 kilometres long. There is also an outdoor gym alongside the Elljusspåret. The two opportunities for activity therefore have clearly different characteristics: the Stenhuggarleden connects Näset and Påskallavik through its north–south extent, while the Elljusspåret, with its stated length and outdoor gym, offers a distinct alternative.
