Medsėdžiai: Hotels and accommodations

Medsėdžiai is located 3 km northeast of Šiūpariai, in the upper reaches of the Agluona River. The place name is attributed to the Curonians; its first component is associated with the Samogitian word „medė“, meaning forest or woodland. Its original meaning may have referred to people who lived in the forest.

Culture and history

The Evangelical Lutheran Church of Dovilai was consecrated on 18 September 1862. It is a three-nave Neo-Gothic building made of hewn stone with inlays of red clay bricks.

The Dovilai hillfort was incorporated into Klaipėda’s defense system at the end of 1944. The local names Pilalės, Pelutės kalnas, and Muškalnis are associated with it. The hillfort contains concrete machine-gun emplacements known as Koch bunkers.

Nature and activities

The Dovilai quarries are included in a list of seven birdwatching sites in the KlaipÄ—da region. They are suitable for recreation and active leisure activities throughout the year. The pine forest next to the Dovilai quarries is suitable for walks and nature-based recreation.

Local connections

The Agluonėnai–Dovilai language route includes sites that may require access off the trails and are not marked on other tourist routes.

The Medsėdžiai community brought a large quantity of its homemade cakes to the „Obuolio dienos“ celebration in Gargždai. The residents of Medsėdžiai also grew blueberries together as part of the funded community project „Medsėdžių uogos“.
