In Klaipėda District, historical spaces, river landscapes, and cultural offerings come together. The district stretches across the historical ethnographic regions of Lithuania Minor and Samogitia.

Culture

The parish church of Dovilai was consecrated on September 18, 1862. Dovilai Hillfort is also known by the names Gedminų pilis and Dusmenų piliakalnis. A cultural heritage route includes Dovilai Hillfort, a church, a former border section, a narrow-gauge railway, and old local cemeteries.

Dovilai Hillfort is located in the “Hillfort Forest” woodland on the right bank of the Minija River. From the settlement of Dovilai, it can be found by following the road signs. The elongated, narrow site is approximately 110 meters long and 20 to 25 meters wide; its steep slopes are about 9 meters high. The site contains trenches, cooking bunkers, and an anti-tank ditch connected to Klaipėda’s defense system.

Routes

The tourist-cultural route “Gyvenimas etnografinių regionų paribyje” consists of 12 selected sites connected with the former borderland. It can be planned independently by visiting all or only selected sites. The excursion “Kelionė su archeologu po Klaipėdos rajono piliakalnius” is offered for schoolchildren and adults.

Programs

The Klaipėda District Ethnic Culture Center in Dovilai offers the “Šiaudo magija” program for learning the traditional craft of straw garden weaving. “Margučių dažymas vašku” focuses on the traditions of wax-decorated eggs. “Iš lietuvininko gyvenimo” presents a rare collection of old books belonging to the Lietuvininkai, while “Skambantys namai” displays a collection of traditional Lithuanian instruments. In the “Juostų vijimo dirbtuvės” workshop, participants can practice making woven bands.

Nature

The Klaipėda District tourism program lists the Šernai Oak, the Šernai Stone, notable oaks in the district, and the porcini mushroom near Dumpiai among its natural attractions.
