Kretingalė: Hotels and Accommodation

Kretingalė is mentioned from 1253 onwards. The town combines a multifaceted Lutheran history with landscapes and excursion destinations along the Danė.

History and Culture

It is believed that a Lutheran congregation was established in Kretingalė in the 17th century. Construction of a wooden Lutheran chapel began in 1652. The Evangelical Lutheran Church of Kretingalė forms the centre of an Evangelical Lutheran congregation; its present church tower was built of masonry in 1875. In 1854, J. F. Kelkis established preparatory courses for a teachers' seminary in Kretingalė. Lithuanian books were sold here at the end of the 19th century.

The military cemetery of Kretingalė is designated as a historical monument. The bridge over the Danė was built in 1880. Festivals of classical music began at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in 2012.

Nature and Leisure

Near Kretingalė, there is a recreation area by the Danė near Sarčiai, set in natural surroundings. A recreation complex begins directly next to the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Kretingalė on Šaltinio Street. It includes a stone-paved path offering views across the Danė valley. There are also viewing platforms with benches, as well as pavilions with fire pits for picnics.

The nearby Eketė hillfort dates from the period between the first millennium and the 13th century. It can be accessed from the Klaipėda–Palanga highway via unpaved roads along the left bank of the Danė. The National Golf Resort is also located nearby, featuring an 18-hole golf course with a par of 72, a practice area and a three-hole short-game course. The golf course is divided by the Danė and includes ponds and sandy coastal lowland terrain.

Geographical Location

The Klaipėda–Kretinga railway line passes through Kretingalė. Roads connect the town with Kretinga and Klaipėda.
