Preila: Dune Views and Village History

At the southern edge of the settlement, you can climb Preilos kopa. The dune is 53 metres high. From there, the view stretches over the Baltic Sea and the lagoon shore, as well as Preilos ragas and the bay. Across the lagoon, the Horn of Ventė may be visible if you are lucky; far to the south, Grobšto ragas, which is part of Russia’s Kaliningrad region, may also appear on the horizon. From the kopa, you can also look out over the Great Curonian Dune Ridge. The view thus takes in nearby points along the coast and lagoon, as well as possible distant views that depend on conditions.

The ridge around Preila is almost entirely covered in pine forest. Mountain pines grow on the ridges, while the slopes are mostly planted with Baltic pines. This combination of forest and open dune gives the landscape a different character from the view across the water. Explore on foot or by bike

A walking trail starts on Preilos kopa at the southern edge of the settlement and follows the lagoon towards Nida. Its route is a helpful point of reference if you would like to make your walk a journey with a destination: the trail starts at the dune and leads along the lagoon towards Nida. Preila is also part of a longer cycling route, as the Curonian Loop long-distance cycling route passes through the village. Check current route conditions before setting out. The walking trail and cycling route offer different ways to include Preila in an active stay, without implying a specific walking or cycling time.

A village with a history

Preila was founded in 1843 by residents who had moved here from Nagliai via Purvynė after the village had been buried by sand. The school’s history also goes back a long way: in 1849, a school was relocated from Naujieji Nagliai to Preila. Children from Pervalka also attended it. The village’s history can be traced through specific places, rather than viewing Preila only as a starting point for exploring the landscape.

After the former school building was destroyed by fire, a new brick school building was built in 1907; it has survived to this day. The preserved building fabric makes the village’s architectural history visible, but does not in itself imply that visitors can enter the building. Preila’s old ethnographic cemetery lies on the other side of the village’s only street and is surrounded by forest. The school and cemetery thus offer two different ways to discover the village as it has developed over time.

Preilos kopa also has a cultural history: several artists painted there during the Soviet era. As a result, the name Menininkų kopa, “Artists’ Dune,” also caught on among locals. The name links this well-known landscape feature with its artistic use during that period, adding a local cultural memory to the experience of nature.

Practical information and a local speciality

The former school building houses a branch of the V. Miliūnas Library, which provides information about places of interest. Check in advance whether this information service is still available. The library also offers free exhibitions and workshop spaces; confirm what is currently available if you would like to include them in your visit plans.

Preila is known for smoked fish. You can buy smoked bream from a local fisherman; it is seasoned with smoke and herbs. A shelter by the lagoon is recommended as a place to eat it. Ask in advance whether the fish is currently available. Alongside the landscape, cycling and village history, local food culture can therefore be another possible focus.
