Vileikiai: Hotels and Accommodation

Vileikiai is located in a contact zone between the Pamarys Lowland and an alluvial delta plain near the Rupkalvių Bog.

Nature

The Nemunas Delta Regional Park was established to preserve the landscape, natural ecosystem and cultural heritage values of the delta. The park includes bays of the Curonian Lagoon, rivers and streams of the delta, oxbow lakes, Lake Krokų Lankos, the Aukštumala raised bog, Rusnė Island and Cape Ventė.

More than 300 bird species have been recorded in the Nemunas Delta, including around 180 species that breed there. Recreational fishing is permitted in the Nemunas Delta Regional Park in accordance with the applicable regulations.

The Aukštumalė Telmological Reserve protects a raised-bog ecosystem with lake complexes, characteristic biocoenoses, and rare or endangered plants and animals. The reserve is home to the Aukštumala Hiking Trail, which has a 2,400-metre round-trip route.

Water

The rivers of the Nemunas Delta and its biodiversity can be explored by boat from Šilutė, Rusnė, Minija or Ventė. The Tulkiaragė Trail can be reached from Šilutė by water via Krokų Lankos and Kampupė.

The Uostadvaris Lighthouse is an 18-metre-high technical heritage monument and also an observation tower offering views of the surroundings of Rusnė and Minija. The restored Uostadvaris Water-Lifting Station houses the Šilutė Polders Museum, although access to the privately owned station is restricted.

The regional educational programme “kafija” includes tastings of various coffee-like drinks and traditional pastries; it can be organised on board a boat.

Culture and History

The Hugo Scheu Manor in Šilutė was established in 1721 and is an example of late Classicist and Historicist architecture. Since 2015, it has housed the Hugo Scheu Museum, and the Šilutė Tourist Information Centre is also located in the manor.

Skirvytėlė is the only village in the Nemunas Delta Regional Park recognised as a nationally significant architectural monument. The Rubokai Cemetery east of Vileikiai dates from the 5th to the 8th century and is listed in the Cultural Heritage Register. The area around Vileikiai has a high concentration of old Evangelical Lutheran parish cemeteries.

The Macikai Camp Museum is associated with a site where Nazi and Soviet detention systems overlapped.
