Kunda Between Beach, River and Industrial History

Kunda brings together different aspects of a stay: at Kunda Beach, the focus is on the beach, surfing and a family-friendly setting, while the Kunda Cement Museum and other historic sites showcase the city’s development through cement production. Cement History at the Kunda Cement Museum

The building of the Kunda Cement Museum was entered into the state register of Estonian cultural monuments as an architectural monument on 4 September 2008. The Kunda Tourism Information Point is also located in the museum, at Jaama tänav 11. The history of cement production in Kunda dates back to 1870. At that time, Kunda manor owner John Carl Girard de Soucanton and chemist Viktor Christoph Lieven began producing cement.

This industrial history also includes the hydroelectric power plant at the rapids of the Kunda jõgi. It was built in 1893 to supply the cement factory with electrical energy. The ruins of Kunda’s first cement factory lie in the river valley. At the museum, visitors can use the “Tuikuv tunnel” attraction to experience what it would be like to be inside a rotary kiln. This makes it possible to explore the industrial past not only through buildings and dates, but also through a museum experience created specifically for this purpose.

In summer 2006, during the Cement Days organized by the Cement Museum and led by Simson von Seakyll, seven cement statues of the founder of the cement factory and manor owner John Carl Girard de Soucanton were created. The statues were made and erected in Kunda, creating a visible monument to the town’s founding history.

Beach, Water and Views

Kunda Beach offers a different way to experience the city. The beach is family-friendly and has a boardwalk that makes access easier for prams and wheelchairs. Boards can be rented and surfing lessons taken at the surf school. This allows you to combine a visit to the beach with a specific water-sports activity without losing sight of Kunda’s cultural themes.

Lontova Adventure Park is located on the banks of the Kunda jõgi. Those looking for a view will find one on Kukerpallimägi, which offers a sweeping panorama over Kunda Bay. At the viewing platform, you can rest and have a picnic. This spot complements the museum and beach offerings with a break overlooking the bay.

Church and Literary Atmosphere

Kunda Stone Church was consecrated in 1928. The Kunda Church has a distinctive architectural feature: its altar is on the western side rather than, as usual, on the eastern side. The Valdese Literary Café aims to host reading evenings in a format open to everyone—in a somewhat old-fashioned and charming manner and in a free creative atmosphere.
