Mahu – Historic Coast, Harbor and Nature

Mahu combines a historic coast between Toolse and Aseri with harbor settlements, river and natural areas, the trail by the Mahu Marsh, and designated swimming spots. The spatial reference points extend from the coastline to Unukse-Mahu Road and Kunda-Malla-Ojaküla Road. The area thus brings together a historically shaped coastal section, harbor connections, two protected-area references, a marsh trail, and designated swimming spots.

Historic Coast and Harbor History

The historic coast of Mahu extends from Toolse to Aseri. Coastal trade has been carried out there for centuries. The history of the area also includes Mahu, also known as Maum and Maholm: these three names referred to the old name of a historic parish before it was later replaced by Viru-Nigula. The older history of the name and the trading tradition belong to different historical contexts. The harbors of Mahu and Lontova were centers of the so-called friendship trade. In addition to this historic harbor connection, the small harbor of Mahu also represents recreational potential.

Protected Areas by the River and in the Coastal Region

In the protected area by the Pada River, the habitat type rivers and streams (3260) and the habitat of the European river lamprey (Lampetra fluviatilis) are protected. The natural area thus encompasses both an aquatic habitat and the habitat of a specific species.

The place name Mahu küla is assigned to the Mahu-Rannametsa looduskaitseala protected area, specifically to the Mahu-Rannametsa LKA, Veskilauri skv. area. In addition to the protected area by the Pada River, this area is therefore also part of Mahu’s natural surroundings. The two protected areas form two separate spatial reference points: one is located by the Pada River, the other in the Mahu-Rannametsa area. At the Pada River, the reference concerns a protected aquatic habitat and a specific species; at the second protected area, it concerns the assignment of the place name Mahu küla to this subarea.

Trail by the Mahu Marsh and Swimming Spots

For active days, a hiking trail runs parallel to the Mahu Marsh. It extends from Unukse-Mahu Road to Kunda-Malla-Ojaküla Road. The marsh accompanies the trail along the described route; the two roads mark its endpoints.

There are also designated swimming spots in the Mahu area. This designated suitability applies to individual spots in the Mahu area and not generally to the entire coastal section.

Travel Orientation and Other Destinations in the Area

The planning area can be reached via the public paved Unukse-Mahu Road. This road is also one of the two spatial reference points of the trail by the Mahu Marsh; the other endpoint is on Kunda-Malla-Ojaküla Road. For travel to the area, the public paved Unukse-Mahu Road is therefore the specific access route, while the other endpoint of the trail is on Kunda-Malla-Ojaküla Road. Other destinations are Viru-Nigula (Viru-Nigula) and Unukse (Unukse).
