In Kingisepp, several historical themes can be explored at specific places: Yam Fortress, Letniy Sad park and St. Catherine’s Cathedral represent different aspects of the city’s history. The museum, open-air exhibition and horseback riding options expand the choice to include exhibitions and activities. You can tailor your stay to whether you are more interested in fortifications, architecture, collections or an activity involving horses.

Yam Fortress and the Historic City

Yam Fortress was built on the old road from Novgorod to Narva to protect the northwestern borders of the Novgorod Republic. For more than a century, it served as an outpost and guarded the route across the Luga, which connected the republic to the sea. Yam therefore offers a glimpse of both the fortification and the historic trade route, as well as its strategic role.

The fortress had a continuous stone wall eight metres high and four towers. In 1448, it received a second outer line of defence; after that, it had nine towers and walls up to 15 metres high.

Letniy Sad park is located in the historic part of Kingisepp, on the grounds of Yam Fortress. It was established in the mid-19th century as an officers’ regimental garden; officers and soldiers of the 146th Tsaritsyn Regiment laid it out. Behind the park, on the bank of the Luga, are the remains of the Yam Fortress wall.

Cathedral, Museum and Other Experiences

St. Catherine’s Cathedral was built from 1764 to 1782 to a design by the Italian architect Antonio Rinaldi. Its style, known as Catherine Baroque, marks a transition from the Baroque to Classicism. The cathedral was consecrated on 6 April 1783 and is named in honour of St. Catherine of Alexandria, the Great Martyr.

The cathedral stands on the site of a wooden Church of the Archangel Michael. It was built to commemorate Yamburg’s liberation from Swedish occupation and burned down in 1761. In the summer of 1990, St. Catherine’s Cathedral was handed over to the Orthodox community and returned to use as a church.
