Vārzas on the Vidzeme Coast

Vārzas is a public bathing area on the Vidzeme Coast of the Gulf of Riga, north of the mouth of the Vidurga River. The site combines a clearly defined stretch of beach with a seaside walking path and several notable erratic boulders in the surrounding area. Those looking for accommodation in Vārzas can therefore get a sense of the destination primarily through its coastline, time at the beach, and short nature experiences.

Bathing Area and Coastal Trail

The public bathing area at Vārzas is approximately 0.8 km long. In the redesigned beach area, the environmental installation “Logs” frames the view of the landscape. A children’s play area complements the facilities on the beach. This makes it possible to combine different activities: spending time at the bathing area, visiting the redesigned area, and walking along the coast.

From the bathing area, a prepared walking path of approximately 1.5 km runs along the seashore to the “Lauču akmens” recreation site. Along the section from the public bathing area at Vārzas to the Lauču boulders, there are boardwalks, changing cabins, bicycle racks, and multifunctional platforms. Signposts in the beach area also indicate directions and distances to points of interest. For local orientation, therefore, not only the beach itself but also the connection to the natural attractions along the shore is relevant.

Erratic Boulders in the Surrounding Area

The Lielais Lauču dižakmens, an ellipsoid-shaped reddish granite boulder, is located near Vārzas. It is 4.3 m long, 3.1 m wide, and 3.1 m high, and has been designated a natural monument since 2001. The Mazais Lauču akmens, a brownish, irregularly shaped granite block with steep sides, is also located in the same area. The two boulders therefore differ clearly in shape and color.

The two large Lauču sea boulders are also associated with a traditional natural history: they were pushed ashore by ice in 1853. The boulders give this stretch of coast a specific natural and landscape character that differs from a simple day at the beach. For visitors who also want to discover geological formations and the traditional history of these stones by the sea, they represent a distinct aspect of the experience.

Getting There and Facilities

The Vārzas bathing area can be reached from the A1 Riga–Tallinn road. To get there, turn toward Vārzas and continue via Tūjas iela. During the bathing season, there is a tourist information point and equipment rental at the bathing area. The tourist information point and equipment rental are therefore part of the bathing area’s seasonal facilities. A rescue station with a medical point has also been established on the beach. There is a rescue station building at the bathing area; however, no rescue service was provided there in 2023. This time-specific qualification remains important when planning a visit to the beach.
