Thelkow: Nature Trails, Kuhlensee and Architectural History

Thelkow combines nature trails, relaxation by the water and traces of cultural history. Highlights include the nature trail leading via Lieper Burg to Teufelssee, Kuhlensee on the northern edge of the village, and a village church whose construction dates back to the second half of the 13th century. This makes it a place where you can combine hiking, swimming and exploring historic buildings and traces of early settlements.

Hiking between Lieper Burg and Teufelssee

A nature trail leads through Thelkow via Lieper Burg to Teufelssee and offers opportunities for hiking and relaxation. The 7.6 km hike “To Lieper Burg” also runs in the immediate vicinity of Thelkow. It leads from Liepen along forest and meadow paths to Lieper Burg and Teufelssee and then back again. The route is designed as an easy to moderate tour on flat to gently hilly terrain and takes around 2 hours and 45 minutes on foot. For planning purposes, the key figures are the 7.6 kilometres and the approximate total walking time of 2 hours and 45 minutes. The easy to moderate rating and the flat to gently hilly terrain provide the setting for the tour’s forest and meadow paths. After Teufelssee, the route leads back to Liepen; the tour forms a closed circular route. The approximate walking time can also serve as a time frame for planned breaks during the hiking day.

When travelling from the B110 in the direction of Tessin and Vilz, the route leads via Thelkow and onwards to Liepen.

Kuhlensee and seasonal water recreation

Kuhlensee is the bathing lake of the municipality of Thelkow and is located on the northern edge of the village. If you plan to go swimming as well as hiking, the annual bathing season at Kuhlensee runs from 15 May to 10 September.

Village church and traces of early settlement

The Thelkow village church is a fieldstone building in which bricks were also used in some parts. It was built around 1260 to 1280 during the transition from the Romanesque to the Gothic architectural style. The building features a richly articulated south portal, star rosettes and a keystone depicting the Lamb of God.

Lieper Burg is an early Slavic hilltop fortification from the 8th century in the municipality of Thelkow. It belongs to the Lieper Burg landscape conservation area.

The megalithic tombs on the Recknitz near Liepen date from 3500 to 2800 BCE and are among the best-preserved structures of the Late Neolithic.
