Dargun offers a variety of reasons to stay: trails lead through nature in the recreation forest, activities on the water beckon at Klostersee lake, and the monastery and palace complex combines historic walls with events. This lets you tailor your trip to your own interests—with nature experiences, cultural history, or both.
Forest, water, and nature parks
Dargun is the gateway to the “Mecklenburg Switzerland and Lake Kummerow” and “Peene Valley River Landscape” nature parks. In Dargun’s recreation forest, the forest discovery trail—with its 15 stops—is one way to spend time in the woods. You can choose between two routes: the 3 km “Yearling Tour” and the 1.5 km “Fawn Tour.” The shorter route is half the length of the longer one; the route length can help you plan your day.
The historic “Slavic Castle Rampart” discovery trail, also in Dargun’s recreation forest, offers a different focus. Information boards explain how Slavs lived and worked more than 1,000 years ago. Those interested in history will find a themed experience here that differs from the stops along the forest discovery trail.
The lakeside promenade at Dargun’s Klostersee lake is an inviting place for a stroll. Swimming, fishing, and boating are also among the activities available there. This means that waterside activities complement the town’s forest and cultural attractions.
Monastery complex, museum, and events
The monastery and palace complex is an event venue that hosts numerous events every year, including the Dargun Music Summer. Since 1990, the complex has been secured, renovated, put to use, and opened to visitors. On a guided tour of the grounds, you can see the imposing walls of the former monastery.
The observation tower is also located within the complex. A spiral staircase with 92 steps leads to the viewing platform, which is 25 m high. From there, the view extends over Dargun, Klostersee lake, and the monastery and palace complex. The climb and the view give this stop its own distinctive place within the historic ensemble.
“Uns lütt Museum” is a local history museum where visitors can handle and try things out. The collection is displayed in 15 rooms and in the outdoor area. The museum is located in the monastery’s former guesthouse and covers 760 m². Concerts and church services are held in the monastery church of St. Mary.
Dargun Watermill is another testament to technological history. It is a listed industrial monument, built as a watermill by Cistercian monks in the 13th century.
More experiences
The maze at Waldeck is a special attraction for the whole family. Hornbeam hedges taller than a person wind through the 8,500 m² site. Those interested in water sports and boating can also visit the Poseidon boat school in Dargun. It offers training for boat licenses for inland waters, as well as at sea and along the coast, including radio operation.
