Gorschendorf: Lake Kummerow and the Peene Canal

At the bathing area on Lake Kummerow near Gorschendorf, the bottom in the swimming area is sandy. At the same time, there is aquatic vegetation as well as silty or boggy areas. The sandy swimming area lies alongside shore zones with a different character. Those wishing to swim will find a sandy bottom there; elsewhere, vegetation, silt and bog shape additional sections of the shore.

Water landscape on the Peene Canal

Another connection to the water leads to the Peene Canal. The Moorbauer excursion restaurant is located in a bog between Lake Kummerow and Lake Malchin. The restaurant's address is Dorfstraße 123, 17139 Gorschendorf. The restaurant's surroundings are shaped not only by a single lake, but also by the canal and the bog. The bog forms the restaurant's immediate setting, while the Peene Canal provides the connection to the water.

The Moorbauer can only be reached from the water. Access is via the water landscape rather than by a conventional road connection. The water route is therefore part of the journey for anyone visiting. On the canoeing section of the Peene, the Moorbauer has ferry and boat landing places in a left-hand side arm near Gorschendorf. These can be used for a break or for launching and taking out a boat. The landing places also mark a section where the canoeing route can be interrupted for a break and a boat can be put into the water.

The Moorbauer can also be reached without your own boat: by the passenger vessel Forelle or by the operator's swan-shaped pedal boats from the opposite side. For your journey, you can therefore choose between a passenger vessel and an operator-owned pedal boat; you do not need your own watercraft. In both cases, access remains dependent on arriving from the water. For travelers without their own boat, this provides a way to arrive entirely by water.

Church History in Gorschendorf

The history of Gorschendorf includes two church buildings. The former church of Gorschendorf was built in 1593 using half-timbered construction. The new church in Gorschendorf was built in 1901 and consecrated on July 14, 1901, in the presence of Grand Duke Friedrich Franz IV. The two church buildings represent different eras and construction methods: the half-timbered building of 1593 was followed by the neo-Gothic replacement building of 1901. The new church was consecrated in the same year. The replacement building and the former church belong to two clearly separate construction phases.

Inside the neo-Gothic village church are small coats of arms of the Moltke, Klitzing, Blücher and Wickede families. These coats of arms originally served as decoration for coffins. This detail is part of the church interior and preserves a special connection to the historical design of funeral adornments. Visitors to the church will find, alongside the neo-Gothic architecture, a small detail with a historical function.

In 2015, the neo-Gothic village church hosted summer services, occasional concerts and a Christmas Eve service.
