Dierhagen lies at the entrance to the Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula. Baltic Sea beaches, Bodden harbours and historic sites showcase different sides of this seaside resort. Whether you want to plan your trip around the beach, the water or regional history, you’ll find specific starting points here—from designated beach areas to tours through the landscape of the Ribnitz Great Moor. Dierhagen can be reached by car, bicycle, plane or on foot.
Beach and beach access
Dierhagen’s white, fine sandy beach is around seven kilometres long and up to 30 metres wide. These measurements give an idea of its size without implying that all sections of the beach are the same. Some areas are designated as naturist beaches, others as dog beaches. If you’re travelling with a dog or looking for a naturist area, you can take these designated sections into account when finding your way around.
There are beach access points for visitors with mobility impairments. Accessible toilets are also available at some beach entrances. Access points and toilets are separate aspects of the beach infrastructure: toilets are not available at every entrance. This allows you to match your choice of beach to the facilities you need, without assuming that all sections have the same amenities.
Harbour and Bodden Lagoon
The Bodden lagoon is also part of Dierhagen’s maritime character. The waterway rest area in Dierhagen Dorf has 54 berths. The Dierhäger harbour and waterway rest area has modern sanitary facilities and a boat slipway. The historic Dändorf Salt Harbour is another well-known stop for waterway travellers: it lies on the western shore of the Saaler Bodden and today serves as a rest area for them.
The passenger ships MS “Ostseebad Wustrow”, MS “Bültenkieker” and MS “Boddenkieker”, operated by Kruse and Voß, also depart from Dierhagen Harbour for Bodden lagoon tours in the “Western Pomerania Lagoon Area” National Park. If you’re interested in a trip on the Bodden, you can include these ships and their departure point at Dierhagen Harbour in your travel plans.
History in Dierhagen Dorf and Dändorf
The “Vergatte von Dierhagen 1799” ship model is displayed in the church in Dierhagen Dorf. The church is open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. from May to September. Exhibitions about the history of the seaside resort of Dierhagen change at the Dändorf History House; the house is open to visitors daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. from May to October. The two venues thus offer different ways to explore the past: a single ship model in the church and changing exhibitions at the History House.
The historic salt road has also been preserved in Dändorf. As a historic monument, it can be seen alongside the old captains’ houses. Anyone interested in the maritime history of the area can explore the road and the houses as distinct historical subjects. The Sunset Piano Concert takes place in Dierhagen every year in late July or early August, with music by Lutz Gerlach and Ulrike Mai.
Moor walk and spa park
From May to October, the “Walk through the Great Moor” tour combines a bike ride with a walk through the Ribnitz Great Moor. It starts at the Haus des Gastes in Dierhagen Strand. The combined format is ideal for travellers who want to bring cycling and walking together in one outing; the Ribnitz Great Moor is the destination named for the tour.
Dierhagen Spa Park was completed in 1998 and is right next to the Haus des Gastes. This means the Haus des Gastes and the spa park are directly adjacent; the moor tour also starts at the Haus des Gastes. For other places in this area, you can also visit Born Am Darß, Dändorf, Wieck Am Darß, Prerow and Wustrow.
