Blowatz between organ music, equestrian tournaments and the Baltic Sea Cycle Route

Those exploring the Baltic Sea coast by bicycle reach Blowatz on the Baltic Sea Cycle Route, after the route has passed the houses of Wodorf. On this section, the cycle route runs on a dedicated cycle path alongside the L12 country road. For active days, there is also a cycle and hiking trail running from Groß Strömkendorf along the Breitling via Damekow and Dreveskirchen towards Stove-Boiensdorf.

Church, organ and summer music

Dreveskirchen is home to a particular cultural highlight. Dreveskirchen Village Church is a listed church building. The Protestant Lutheran village church is a listed brick building dating from the second half of the 13th century and reflects the transition from Romanesque to Gothic architecture. Its furnishings include Baroque interior elements, a late Gothic rood group and medieval wall paintings.

The organ also makes the church noteworthy for visitors interested in culture: the organ of Dreveskirchen Village Church is the oldest surviving Paul Schmidt organ in Mecklenburg. The Paul Schmidt organ in Dreveskirchen Village Church was built in 1754 and restored from 1999 to 2001. The restored organ can be heard at concerts held as part of the annual Dreveskirchen Summer of Music.

During the summer months, Dreveskirchen Protestant Church is open daily. In July and August, you can visit it daily from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m.; visits are also possible by prior arrangement. This allows you to combine an excursion along the trails with a direct insight into architectural history, furnishings and organ culture.

Equestrian sports and felt art

The Blowatz Riding and Driving Association has been holding equestrian tournaments for many years. The tournament grounds of the Blowatz Riding and Driving Association were gradually developed into a competition venue by the municipality with the support of the LPG. The grounds include a thatched judges’ tower. The association’s recreational riders also meet for group rides.

Another facet can be discovered in Martina Weiß’s garden: visitors can felt their own ribbons there, and a felting table invites them to try felting themselves. In a round wooden pavilion, Martina Weiß presents felt-and-silk clothing, caps, backpacks and felt seat cushions. This complements the historical church and landscape themes with a hands-on activity.

Historical traces and regional sights

About 1,200 years ago, a large maritime trading center existed west of Groß Strömkendorf on the Bay of Wismar; it is referred to as old Rerik. Wodorf is home to a thatched painter’s house, one of the sights in the region around Blowatz. Heidekaten is also home to the former workplace of Mecklenburg painter Carl Hinrichs; it too is one of the sights in the region around Blowatz.

Cycle routes and nature experiences

The route from Groß Strömkendorf along the Breitling via Damekow and Dreveskirchen towards Stove-Boiensdorf connects cycling and hiking tours. The Farpener Reservoir, which boasts a diverse flora and fauna, is also suitable for a hike. This allows you to shape your days according to your interests, alternating between the coastal cycle route, regional trails, historical sites and a nature-focused hike.
