Gägelow between Wismar and important road connections

Gägelow is located on the B 105 federal road at the gates of the Hanseatic city of Wismar. The A 20 motorway and the B 106 and B 105 federal roads provide direct road connections to the economic regions of Lübeck, Rostock and Schwerin. Connections to several economic regions extend the area's road links beyond the Hanseatic city.

Cultural history in Proseken and Bössow

Gägelow is home to Proseken village church, an imposing brick church. Art historians date its main structure to the third quarter of the 13th century. Its features include the 15th-century west tower, the lavish interior, the late medieval pulpit from 1656, the 13th-century limestone baptismal font, the Winzer organ built in 1868, and surviving remnants of wall paintings. The building's history and furnishings form a coherent cultural and historical focus here. Those interested in culture can view the brick structure as well as the pulpit, baptismal font, organ and remnants of wall paintings as specific points of interest.

In addition, Proseken megalithic tomb is located 200 metres beyond the village exit from Proseken towards Klütz, in a field near a group of trees. This precise location identifies the special site within its surroundings. The megalithic tomb is separate from the church site and has its own landscape setting defined by the field and group of trees.

The village church of Bössow is also located in the area around Gägelow. Bössow is a district of Warnow and complements the churches in the surrounding region.

Beaches, islands and parks in the surrounding area

The area around Gägelow features several different types of landscape: Wangernp Beach, Walfisch Island and Poel Island are located here. Fliemstorf Huk, a cape, is also nearby. Wangernp, Walfisch, Poel and Fliemstorf Huk represent different landscape sites around Gägelow.

Parks and animal experiences are also part of the regional landscape. Bürgerpark, a park, and Wismar Zoo are located in the immediate vicinity of Gägelow. Further afield in the region is the Erlebnis- und Tigerpark Dassow, also a zoo. Bürgerpark and the zoos are separate destinations alongside the churches and landscape sites.

Trails for pilgrims, walkers and cyclists

The stage of the Via Baltica pilgrimage route begins at the Gägelow-Kreuzung bus stop. The Weitendorf Art Trail begins behind a chapel dedicated to Saint George; modern sculptures line the trail. The Gägelow-Kreuzung bus stop is a separate starting point for the Via Baltica.

The cultural cycling route is marked with the logo of Weitendorf Chapel, which represents the cultural focus of the route. Pilgrims use the beginning of the Via Baltica for orientation, while cycle tourists follow the logo of Weitendorf Chapel.
