Groß Strömkendorf: Reric, Coastal Landscape and Cycle Path

History and Coastal Character

The archaeological site of Groß Strömkendorf is equated with the trading center of Reric. Reric dates back to the Carolingian period and is associated with the year 808.

Shoreline Between Wetland and Cliff

The shore areas of Groß Strömkendorf and Breitling include salt meadows and brackish-water reed beds on alluvial islands and shores. Tidal creeks and small water bodies run through these areas; extremely wet flooded areas alternate with higher-lying dry areas. The varying degrees of moisture do not follow a straight shoreline, but instead lie side by side in the areas crossed by tidal creeks and small water bodies. For coastal observation, it is therefore not only the waterline that matters, but also the changing ground conditions and moisture levels.

In the area around Redentin, Groß Strömkendorf and Breitling, short cliff sections on the mainland side also alternate with very shallow flooded sections. The waters of Breitling are predominantly less than 1 m deep and have layers of silt on the bottom. For coastal observation, the sequence of cliff, flooded section and muddy waterbed is therefore relevant.

Water Activities in the Surrounding Area

In the area of Wismar Bay and the Salzhaff, you can fish, sail, paddle and go boating in compliance with the navigation and fishing regulations. There are also various areas for kitesurfing, windsurfing, stand-up paddling (SUP), wingfoiling and jet skiing in the bird sanctuary. The spatial planning of a water activity therefore depends on the navigation and fishing regulations as well as on the various areas in the bird sanctuary. When choosing between paddling, sailing and boating on the one hand and kitesurfing, windsurfing, SUP, wingfoiling and jet skiing on the other, the respective area therefore remains decisive. When taking a trip on the water, the respective area is consequently part of the planning.

Cycling to Groß Strömkendorf

The signposted Baltic Sea Coast Cycle Route leads via Redentin to Groß Strömkendorf. From Groß Strömkendorf, you can turn off to the Poel nature conservation island. This means that the route via Redentin and the turnoff from Groß Strömkendorf to the Poel nature conservation island can be planned as two separate sections. Redentin lies on the way to Groß Strömkendorf, while Poel is added as a turnoff destination at the village. For orientation, the sequence can be read specifically as follows: first Redentin and Groß Strömkendorf, then the turnoff to Poel or the continuation along the L12 to Wodorf.

The Baltic Sea Cycle Route then runs along the L12 country road on a dedicated lane and reaches the houses of Wodorf. When planning an active day, both the approach via Redentin and the turnoff to the Poel nature conservation island, as well as the continuation to Wodorf, are therefore available as different orientation points in the cycle route network. This allows you to consider continuing along the L12 separately from the turnoff to Poel island.
