Klütz between Townscape, Mill and Castle
Klütz between Townscapes and Excursion Destinations
If you are looking for a place with a historic townscape and a variety of ideas for day trips, Klütz offers several clear points of interest: strolls through a romantic townscape, culture in distinctive buildings, rides on a narrow-gauge railway, and routes through the landscape of the Klützer Winkel. Klütz’s romantic townscape invites you to linger and explore. Highlights include the early Gothic St. Mary’s Church, the “Uwe Johnson” Literature House, Bothmer Castle and Klütz Mill.
Historic Buildings and Literature
Historic buildings shape the townscape of Klütz and reflect centuries of aristocratic rule, craftsmanship, agriculture and flourishing trade between Lübeck and Wismar. The chancel is the oldest part of St. Mary’s Church in Klütz and dates from the mid-13th century. The “Uwe Johnson” Literature House is located in a listed former granary built around 1890. It houses a permanent exhibition about the writer’s life and work.
Bothmer Castle also makes its own distinctive contribution. The Festoon Alley at Bothmer Castle is one of the best-known sights in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. A walk there allows you to experience the interplay of Baroque architecture and landscape design, as well as a 270-metre-long sunken lane. Klütz Mill stands at the highest point of the town of Klütz, at an elevation of 32 metres, and adds a striking landmark to the historic points of interest.
Railway, Hiking and Tropical House
The route of the “de Lütt Kaffeebrenner” narrow-gauge railway from Klütz to Reppenhagen is 6 kilometres long and runs through the landscape of the Klützer Winkel. On the “de Lütt Kaffeebrenner”, you can take rides with a steam locomotive or historic diesel locomotives. If you would like to plan a longer route, the easy “Over Fields and Meadows” hike covers approximately 15 kilometres. It starts at the Klütz Tourist Information Office or the “Uwe Johnson” Literature House. At the Butterfly World in Klütz, you can observe hundreds of butterflies in a tropical house.
Crafts, Art and Events
At the “Kein Käse” gallery in the Old Dairy in Klütz, you can make your own macramé jewellery. The “das Spinnrad” gallery in the Old Dairy demonstrates how woollen products are made using a spinning wheel and loom. The Catrin Freuschle artists’ gallery offers cinema, concerts, theatre and hands-on activities. The cultural programme therefore ranges from engaging traditional crafts to community events.
Regional Cuisine
Klütz offers typical Mecklenburg and regional cuisine as well as traditional German dishes, cafés and homemade cakes. Klütz Mill also has a farm shop, while the orangery at Bothmer Castle serves savoury dishes.
For further travel planning, you can also select Boltenhagen, Zierow, Damshagen, Kalkhorst and Hohenkirchen.
