Coastal Location

Dargen is located in the Achterland of Usedom, directly on the Kleines Haff lagoon. Near Lake Kachlin stands the Kachlin wind-powered pumping station, a technical monument built in 1920.

Culture and History

The Kunsthof Usedom cultural center is located in Katschow. It was created by the painter and sculptor Roland Oesker.

The DDR Museum Dargen / Usedom e.V. was established in 1997 on the grounds of a former agricultural trading cooperative. Its exhibits focus on motorcycles from the GDR, engine technology, tractors, NVA technology, ambulances, cars, and firefighting equipment. The club restaurant of the DDR Museum Dargen / Usedom e.V. serves typical GDR dishes and homemade cake.

Nature and Landscape

The visitor tour at Wisentpark provides information about Usedom’s wildlife, the development of nature, and the island’s landscape history. In Dargen’s Prätenow district, Wisentpark includes 3 hectares of unmanaged natural forest as well as enclosures where more than 70 bird species breed.

The European bison enclosure in Prätenow was opened by NABU Germany in summer 2004 as a breeding and display enclosure. Visitors can observe European bison at close range; there is also an aviary. The bison enclosure provides information about European bison and conservation work aimed at reintroducing the animals into native forests.

Landscape and Cycling

The Thurbruch is a broad, flat landscape characterized by drainage ditches, meadows, pastures, rapeseed fields, and grain fields. It can be explored on foot or by bicycle. The Usedom Traditions cycling tour passes through Dargen, Kachlin, and Katschow.
