Zirchow: Hotels and Accommodation

Zirchow is located directly on the northern shore of the Szczecin Lagoon. The village lies within the Usedom Island Nature Park, which covers approximately 59,000 hectares, including 5,500 hectares of nature reserves.

Nature

The Thurbruch lies west of Zirchow and is partially designated as a nature reserve. It is considered one of the largest lowland moorland areas in northern Germany. Within the Usedom Island Nature Park, the Thurbruch is a refuge for moorland flora and fauna.

Airport

Heringsdorf Regional Airport is located within the municipal areas of Zirchow and Garz. Heringsdorf Airport has a 2,305-metre-long runway and an instrument approach. The airport building houses the Airport Miniaturwelt exhibition, which presents airport-related miniature models across more than 200 square metres. On Usedom, Hangar10 also displays airworthy historic aircraft.

Culture

St. James's Church is a late-Gothic brick and fieldstone church dating from the 13th century and the oldest surviving church building on Usedom. Medieval wall paintings have been partially uncovered in the altar area. The square west tower was added in the 15th century and later topped with a Baroque cupola. The portal doors could be barricaded with wooden beams to provide protection during raids. Lyonel Feininger frequently used the church as a subject for his paintings. The Kiba Foundation named it “Church of the Month: October 2022”.

Getting Around

Tour 18 begins at the church in Zirchow, passes under an old railway bridge and reaches a larger wooded area. A seating area is the first resting point on Tour 18. Paved cycle paths connect Zirchow with Bansin, Ahlbeck, Heringsdorf, Kamminke, Garz, Świnoujście and Usedom.
