There are parking spaces at Mariendal Beach. A water station near Mariendalgården, Ørnevænget 37–41, 8330 Beder, is approximately 500 m away. There is also a dry toilet, waste bins and picnic tables; fire pits are located in the surrounding area. Swimming, skimming stones and fishing are possible. National Cycle Route N5 passes Mariendal Beach. It is a good starting point for hikes north towards Fløjstrup and Moesgaard.

Hiking Trails Through Forest and Moorland

There are four hiking trails in Beder-Malling starting at Egelund. They are 3.8 km, 5.8 km, 7 km and 11.3 km long, making it possible to compare different route lengths. The Vilhelmsborg Route follows the Giber Å through Vilhelmsborg Skov and passes Rokballe Mølle, a 17th-century mill and one of several mills along the Giber Å. Vilhelmsborg serves as a national equestrian centre.

The white route, “Beder-Mallingstien”, leads from Egelund Idrætscenter via Kirkebakken and back along Hovedbækken. This stream drains the moor between Malling and Beder. Beder Church can be seen from the route; it was built in 1150 by the residents of the parish. After Byagerparken, the described route reaches Bymosen. In spring, the abundant birdlife and the croaking of many frogs can be heard there.

Local History in Beder and Malling

The history of the areas can also be seen in concrete terms. The cemetery of Malling Church was a fortified cemetery in the early Middle Ages, also known as a folk fort. The baptismal font in Malling Church dates from around the 12th century and is the church’s oldest item of inventory. In Beder, numerous buildings illustrate the area’s development from a collection of farms into a railway town. Kirkestien is considered part of the original trade and transport route connecting to the loading harbour in Norsminde.

In 2021, the local-history walking-tour routes “Børnenes Lokalhistorie” in Beder-Malling were offered through the free-to-download OpdagAarhus app. For transport around the area, the Aarhus Light Rail serves both Beder and Malling.
