Fuglslev: Village History, Stubbe Sø and Trails Through Nature

Fuglslev combines village history with surroundings consisting of meadows, a lake, wetlands, forest and hilly terrain. This combination is interesting for visitors who want to bring together traces of cultural history, nature observation and outdoor activity in a single trip.

Village History and Places of Remembrance

Fuglslev Church is located in the meadows near the village of Fuglslev. Its north wall preserves traces of an earlier Romanesque church. The former settlement structure can also be dated precisely: in 1688, Fuglslev consisted of ten farms of varying sizes and six houses along the village road without land ownership. Here, you encounter the history of the area both in a religious building and in the traditional layout of the village.

Fuglslev is regarded both as a church village and as a former market town. On Tuesday, 10 August 1706, a Grandestævne, that is, a village assembly, was held in Fuglslev. The specific date points to a local history that consists not only of structural traces, but also of communal events and different historical functions.

East of Fuglslev, a reunification stone erected in 1934 stands in a plantation. The Fuglslev Stone is the youngest reunification stone in Syddjurs Municipality. In June 2018, the stone was provided with a newly created stone cairn. Nature at Stubbe Sø

In the surrounding area, Stubbe Sø covers 376 hectares and is the largest lake on Djursland. At the eastern end of Stubbe Sø, there is a shelter site where you can spend the night. The birdwatching tower at Stubbe Sø offers a view over the wetlands and the nearest part of the lake. Many different bird species breed at the birdwatching tower and are often visible there in spring and summer.

In the surrounding area, Stubbe Sø and the Ulstrup Ådal area offer good birdwatching opportunities for attentive hikers. This gives nature observation a second, geographically different perspective alongside the view over the wetlands and lake. If you want to keep a deliberate lookout while on the move, slow observation is one of the obvious interests around Fuglslev.

Jernhatten and Trails Through the Landscape

In the surrounding area, Jernhatten rises 49 metres above sea level and is the highest point in the vicinity. At Jernhatten, there is a viewpoint overlooking the sea. The Jernhatten Route runs for approximately 23.5 km along gravel roads and smaller country roads and passes through forest, meadows and hilly terrain. For active day planning, elevation, sea views and a varied route are therefore combined, while the approximate length provides an additional point of reference.

In the surrounding area, the Gravlev Nature Trail follows a former railway line that is now designated as a nature trail for cycling trips and longer walks. Together with the Jernhatten Route, this illustrates the difference between a route through forest, meadows and hilly terrain and a nature trail on a former railway track. This allows you to organise your interests around cycling, longer walks, viewpoints and nature observation.
