Gjerrild between Coast, Cliff and Village Green

Between coast, paths and village history, Gjerrild reveals several sides. The sea and nature come to the fore at Gjerrild Nordstrand; Gjerrildbanestien, Gjerrild Klint and the village green surrounded by roads each create their own local focal points.

Coast and distinctive landscape

Gjerrild Nordstrand is a small natural area. Its main attractions are the sea and the nature along the coastal stretch. In 1972, Gjerrild Nordstrand was protected in order to preserve the area as a publicly accessible recreational and bathing area. The protected status is therefore part of the area's history. As a publicly accessible recreational and bathing area, Gjerrild Nordstrand remains closely associated with spending time by the water. The small natural area is thus focused on the sea, the coastal stretch and time spent by the water.

The coastal formation at Gjerrild Klint drops almost vertically to the beach. The beach has soft flint stones and a short distance to deep water. This makes it popular for sea fishing. The distinctive terrain edge and the special shoreline features shape this section within a confined area.

Near Gjerrild on Djursland, the Svalebøg is also designated as a risk tree. It is intended to be preserved for as long as possible.

Paths and nature experiences

The approximately 28 km-long Gjerrildbanestien passes through Gjerrild, Hemmed, Tranehuse, Stenvad, Ramten, Nimtofte and Ryomgård. In Gjerrild, there is also a connection from Gjerrildbanestien to Nordsøstien. Its approximate length is a separate factor when planning a day trip. A section can be considered in stages, while several stages cover the entire route. For a shorter excursion, the section remains a separate framework; with several stages, planning extends beyond the village centre. The path continues to Ryomgård and thus connects several places along its route. The connection to Nordsøstien adds another route connection in Gjerrild that can be included in longer route planning.

Hestehaven has been established as a woodland and moorland area for active use by nature lovers and people who want to exercise. The clearing between the two Hestehave Lakes is equipped with a fire pit, tables, benches and a shelter. The specific facilities make the clearing a place to stay within the woodland and moorland area. Those planning a break there will find a fire pit, tables, benches and a shelter in the same place. In addition to the coastal stretch, Hestehaven thus introduces a different landscape setting to the visit.

Village structure and church

Gjerrild is characterised as an irregular village arranged around a village green and roads. The old farms are grouped around the village green, where the church also stands. For those interested in culture, this arrangement forms the outer framework of the village centre.

The rich interior furnishings of Gjerrild Church include, in particular, the wall paintings. The oldest part of the church was built from chalk stone. The cultural character of the place thus extends from the village green into the church interior.

On the same level are also Anholt, Ramten, Glesborg, Store Sjørup, Udbyhøj, Grenå, Auning and Selkær.
