Ramten: Lakes, Moorlands and the Gjerrildbanestien

Ramten reveals its character through bodies of water and open landscapes. This natural setting is complemented by the Gjerrildbanestien and by historical traces in Ramten and Huldremose. Lakes and landscape

Dystrup Sø covers 26 hectares and has an average depth of 1 metre. Ramten Sø covers 29 hectares; its average depth is 1.2 metres. The two bodies of water therefore differ in size and each presents its own characteristic landscape. Those who want to make lakes the focus when choosing their destination will find two bodies of water in Ramten with clearly stated dimensions. Ramten Sø is therefore 3 hectares larger than Dystrup Sø; its average depth is 0.2 metres greater.

The landscape around Ramten Sø and Dystrup Sø combines moorland, meadows, extensive grassland and cultivated fields. Dystrup Sø is one of the most important birdwatching sites on Djursland. In addition, Dystrup Sø and Ramten Sø are covered by a protection designation that encompasses a total of 190 hectares.

Observing nature and getting around

Huldremose is a small, shallow and partly overgrown moorland area. The landscape around Ramten Sø and Dystrup Sø can be viewed from the surrounding smaller roads and from the Gjerrildbanestien. This gives you different perspectives: the moorland forms its own natural area, while the lake landscape can also be seen along the paths and roads. The open waters of the lakes differ from the small, shallow and partly overgrown moorland. The Gjerrildbanestien runs through Ramten and along the western shore of Ramten Sø. There are several benches for resting there. At the same time, Ramten Sø remains a destination in its own right: the western shore connects the body of water with the route of the path without the two becoming one single location.

Historical references in Ramten

The Femte Maj Stenen memorial stone in Ramten stands at the corner of P. Madsensvej and Savværksvej. Huldremose is the site where an Iron Age bog body was found; it was discovered in 1879. Alongside nature and activity, these two specific points also provide a historical connection for trip planning. Those interested in local history can therefore view Ramten through the memorial stone in the village and through the find site in the moorland.

Fjellerup Strand, a beach, is located in the surroundings of Ramten. Fjellerup Strand adds a beach as a distinct landscape feature to the area around Ramten.
