Discover Ebeltoft: Harbor Town Between History, Glass and Coast
Ebeltoft between Harbor, Trading History and Coastal Landscapes
Ebeltoft combines a maritime setting with an unusually diverse cultural and natural landscape. The exhibition at Det Gamle Rådhus tells the history of the trading town from the Stone Age to the present day. At the harbor, a fishing harbor and an active marina meet; both are just a few steps from the town’s streets, shops and restaurants. This makes it possible to discover Ebeltoft according to your personal interests, whether as a destination for history, harbor atmosphere, nature experiences or active days.
Wide Views and Paths Through the Landscape
From the Skelhøje, panoramic views stretch west over Ebeltoft’s sea of rooftops to Mols Bjerge with Trehøje, onward to Helgenæs with the Dragsmur isthmus, south to Samsø and Tunø, and east to the island of Hjelm in the Kattegat. For walks and bike rides, Ebeltoft’s four Kløverstier offer a clear selection: together, they cover around 27 kilometers around the town and through the surrounding landscape. The individual routes are 2.5, 5, 7.5 and 12 kilometers long, making it easy to compare the distances.
The Mols Bjerge Trail also begins with a stage in Ebeltoft. The starting point is at Østeralle 9 next to Ebeltoft Skole. For the Ebeltoft stage, you can park in Ebeltoft, take bus 123 to Femmøller and then walk the stage back to your own car. This provides a practical way to combine a visit to the town with a longer hike through the landscape.
Nature at Ebeltoft Vig and Maritime Experiences
The eastern part of Ebeltoft Vig, close to the town, is designated as a wildlife reserve. The protected area serves year-round as a resting place for flocks of mute swans, mallards and gulls. Anyone wishing to combine views of the coastal landscape with culture can find a viewing hill in the garden of Farvergården, which extends to Strandvejen, with views of, among other things, Ebeltoft Vig and the frigate. Farvergården is the only preserved dye works in a trading town in Northern Europe.
The frigate Jylland has been in Ebeltoft since 1960; the Danish navy approved Ebeltoft as the frigate’s home port. This includes activities with lively interpretation, where you can learn about its history from a guide. A trip is also offered on the largest dinghy, Robarkasse No. 1, which was formerly used to transport crew, coal and provisions. Historic wooden ships as well as modern pleasure boats are welcome in Fregathavn. Guests can use toilets, showers and electricity at the south and east piers. The harbor also offers guest berths for boats up to 50 feet long and 4.5 meters wide.
Glass Art, Events and Suitable Accommodation
Glas – Museet for glaskunst has a collection of more than 1,800 works of modern glass art from around the world. In the glassblowing studio and workshop, visitors can see traditional glass craftsmanship and hot-working techniques in use. Workshops and activities are held throughout the year, allowing children and adults to experiment with glass. Maltfabrikken was newly created and opened as Folkets Fabrik in 2020. It is a place for art, culture, business and entrepreneurship; at Kulturloft, the program includes music, lectures, artist talks, art in various styles and debates.
In summer, Jazz på Torvet adds to the cultural offerings: from the end of June to the end of August, free concerts are held every Saturday. The night watchmen of Ebeltoft are first mentioned toward the end of the 17th century. During the main summer season, from June 28 to August 23, their tours begin at 7 and 8 p.m. at Det Gamle Rådhus. For water activities, Sejlklubben Ebeltoft Vig is open to anyone who would like to sail or go stand-up paddleboarding. When choosing your accommodation, you can therefore first decide whether culture, the harbor, nature, hiking or water sports should be the focus of your stay.
The same selection also includes Handrup Handrup, Elsegårde Elsegårde, Dejret Dejret, Thorsager Thorsager, Hornslet Hornslet, Femmøller Femmøller and Balle Balle.
