Skødshoved Strand: Discover the Coast, Harbour and Nature

Skødshoved Strand brings together several different coastal experiences for your trip planning: a cycling loop and coastal drive, harbour and pier, bird areas, beach paths and wide-open views. If you are looking for a hotel for your stay, you can first decide whether days by the water, nature observation or active routes should be the main focus. It is worth taking a closer look at the respective characteristics of the individual places and routes.

Harbour, cycling loop and maritime history

For a longer cycling tour, the 30 km Mols Hoved loop provides a clear point of reference: among other places, it passes Skødshoved Bro. The coastal drive through Mols Bjerge National Park also includes the area; on this drive, the harbour of Skødshoved is circumnavigated. Thus, the harbour and bridge feature both in connection with cycling and with a drive along the coast.

Skødshoved Bro is also a popular destination for boat trips from Aarhus. The area's maritime history dates back to the early 20th century: Skødshoved Bro Jollehavn was then an old landing place for packet boats operating scheduled services between Aarhus and Mols. At Skødshoved Lystbådehavn, for example, you can catch crabs from the pier.

The harbour of Skødshoved is easily accessible via Vestre Strandvej; there are around 80 parking spaces there. At Skødshoved Strand, the water already reaches a depth of 2 metres 25–30 metres from the shore.

Beach meadows, reeds and birdwatching

The Skødshoved bird protection area covers approximately 29 hectares of beach meadows and a small reed marsh. The Skødshoved bird locality is characterised by breeding and resting ducks and waders. These habitats are particularly relevant for nature enthusiasts; at the same time, the bird locality is difficult to access. However, parts of the area can be viewed from a public road.

The surrounding landscape also offers a striking viewpoint: From the 58-metre-high Basbjerg, there is a wide view of Kalø and Aarhus. In Syddjurs, four to five stands are distributed across Dejret Øhoved, the area near Skødshoved close to Strands and Fejrup; they may possibly still be found at Øer.

Paths with different requirements

The “Skødshoved – Gul rute” route passes along a rocky section of beach. It is not suitable for people with walking disabilities or for pushchairs. During high tide, parts of the beach section are flooded. If you take this route into consideration, you should therefore include both the surface conditions and the water conditions in your day planning.

The “Skødshoved” path from “Spor i landskabet” is designated as private and is 2.5 km long. The two paths therefore differ not only in length, but also in their designated status and in the conditions on site. When choosing your accommodation and excursions, it is therefore useful to distinguish between a harbour visit, nature observation, the cycling loop and the specific beach sections.
