Ugelbølle by the Sea: Hills, Nature and the Mols Route

Ugelbølle Beach is a good starting point if you want to spend your days by the water and in the countryside. There is a car park, a toilet and a bathing jetty. The water is very shallow and offers good swimming opportunities, especially for families with small children. East of the car park, there is a headland with good fishing opportunities.

Hiking between the Coast and the Hills

The long-distance hiking trail E1 Mols Route, established by Dansk Vandrelaug, runs along Ugelbølle Beach. The Mols Route is approximately 80 km long and leads from the bathing establishment at Riis Skov in Aarhus to the harbour in Grenaa. As part of the E1 long-distance trail, it particularly appeals to travellers who want to combine longer sections of trail with coastal and landscape experiences.

A shorter option is the Stenrunden in Rønde. It is a short, 4.2 km circular hiking trail with a walking time of approximately one hour and passes five large erratic boulders from the project. This combines a compact walk with a specific landscape theme.

Glacial Traces around Kalø Vig

The Rønde-Ugelbølle hills are a terminal moraine ridge that was pushed up in front of a glacier 200 to 400 metres high. The ice came from the Baltic Sea, reached Ebeltoft, Mols and Rønde 18,000 years ago, slowly melted there and left behind glacial valleys such as Kalø Vig, as well as stones of all sizes. The hills and valleys make the area's geological formation an immediate theme of a stay.

South of Ugelbølle lies a protected area that is considered a landscape-geological attraction. The protected landscape covers 139 hectares of farmland between Ugelbølle and Kalø Vig. It preserves the view from the old Aarhus–Grenaa road across the hilly terminal moraine around Kalø Vig. From the viewpoint on Tangvejen between Ugelbølle and Ugelbølle Beach, you can look out over the protected farmland.

Golf, Cycle Path and Local Meeting Place

There are also specific options for active days away from the hiking trails. Kalø Golf Club offers green-fee play on a well-maintained and challenging 18-hole golf course. The club also rents out buggies and trolleys and sells balls for the driving range. One project includes a 3 km cycle path between Rodskov and Ugelbølle that can be used in both directions.

When choosing a hotel in Ugelbølle, you can shape the focus of your trip around these different landscapes and activities: shallow water at Ugelbølle Beach, the Mols Route and the Stenrunden for exercise, the protected landscape around Kalø Vig for geological impressions, or Kalø Golf Club for a round on the 18-hole course. Ugelbølle Forsamlingshus is also one of the assembly halls in Syddjurs Municipality.

For further trip planning, you can also consider Ebdrup, Begtrup, Holme, Thorsager, Kolind, Vrinners, Stubbe and Ahl.
