Solbacken is home to 30 historic cultural heritage houses that were relocated there from various parts of Malmberget. The area also has an outdoor facility with playground equipment, a pump track, and an outdoor fitness area. When planning your stay, you can consider local history and exercise as separate areas of interest.

Solbacken and the houses from Malmberget

The cultural heritage houses were relocated gradually. Solbacken was developed in stages, with the historic buildings arriving there step by step. The project was completed by 2021. The houses therefore represent not a single undertaking, but a development in which the area and its buildings came together over several stages.

Villa, regional history, and art

Disponentvillan adds the story of a single building to this history. It was built in Malmberget in 1894 and served as an LKAB director’s residence until the first half of the 1980s. Its former function offers a tangible insight into Malmberget’s history and differs from the collective relocation of the cultural heritage houses.

Koskullskulle and Malmberget are also part of Norrbotten’s technological megasystem. This regional network includes the ore fields, the Ore Railway, the ore harbor, the Porjus power station, and Boden Fortress. These components therefore extend beyond the history of a single locality. S:t Josefs kapell is also located in Koskullskulle.

The artwork “Gruvarbetare skjuter hund” stands in the park in Koskullskulle. After renovation, it has returned to its place. Alongside the history of the houses and regional development, visitors can therefore find a specific artwork and the chapel as named local landmarks.

Outdoor activities and time outside

The outdoor facility in Koskullskulle combines playground equipment, a pump track, and an outdoor fitness area. These offer different ways to spend time outside and can be considered as separate activity options when planning your days. The Koskullskullepark offers a different kind of outdoor experience: it has illuminated seating areas and lighting in the trees, inviting people to spend time together even after sunset. If the lighting is important to your plans, check its current status before visiting; installations like these can change over time.

Djävulsklyftan nearby

Djävulsklyftan lies between Koskullskulle and Tjautjasjaure. The access route begins just outside Koskullskulle and leads there on foot or by bicycle. The walking route from the road to the gorge is slightly more than three kilometres long. Experienced mountain bikers can cycle almost the entire distance. For this excursion, you can therefore choose between walking and the cycling option described, without assuming a specific walking time or level of difficulty.

Nautanenloppet: distances and event details

The Nautanenloppet ski race began in 1923. At the 2025 event, participants raced in the classic style over six kilometres or, alternatively, nine kilometres. The nine-kilometre option was linked to a competition for a challenge trophy. A children’s race was also held in the park after the main race on 1 March 2025. If you are planning to attend a future event, check the distances and programme again: the course details refer to 2025, and the children’s race was part of that event.
