Luleå: Archipelago, Church Town and Culture

Luleå shows its maritime side particularly clearly in the archipelago: 1,312 islands, relatively untouched vegetation and important bird breeding grounds characterize this landscape. There are varied fishing opportunities for pike, perch, whitefish and sea trout. The archipelago is accessible year-round. In summer, excursion boats operate daily, while in winter, cleared ice roads lead to some of the larger islands.

The regional division includes the places Luleå, Södra Sunderbyn and Gammelstad.

Culture and History

One of the city’s prominent cultural landmarks is Luleå Cathedral. It was inaugurated in 1893 and is Sweden’s northernmost and youngest cathedral. At the same time, it is a Neo-Gothic church made of red brick.

In Gammelstad, the church town preserves the best-preserved example of this unique type of church town in Northern Scandinavia. It has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1996. More than 400 church cottages have been preserved, and the tradition of staying overnight temporarily continues. The church in Gammelstad has stood in the same location since 1492 and is still in use.

The history of the place is connected with post-glacial land uplift: it made the port of Gammelstad too shallow, which is why the town was moved closer to the coast in 1649. The Gammelstad Visitor Center offers guided tours year-round.

Living Heritage Interpretation

Hägnan is an open-air cultural history museum. During the summer season, it is open to the public every day; at the farms, performers dressed in period clothing convey an impression of times gone by. Visitors can watch animals in the enclosures, walk on stilts and play with children.

Norrbottens Museum offers visitors of all ages guided tours, workshops and lectures. Its exhibitions showcase Norrbotten, cultural heritage and the wider world. At the Teknikens Hus science center, natural sciences, technology and mathematics are the focus; the program is aimed at all age groups.

At Teknikens Hus, visitors can operate trucks, forestry machines and harvesting machinery. A VR headset also makes it possible to experience working in a mine or steel mill. The different forms of interpretation therefore range from cultural-historical farms and guided tours to hands-on and virtual approaches.

Music and Activity

In Luleå Cathedral parish, the Luleå parish offers concerts, musical services and other musical events. For active days, there are mountain-biking trails at Ormberget, in Karlsvik and in Måttsund. The trails are suitable for experienced riders and beginners.

Luleå also has well-developed urban cycling routes and around 170 kilometers of cycle paths. Mountain-biking trails and urban cycling routes can be considered separately when planning.

The Luleå Tourist Center provides information about archipelago boats, attractions, excursions and events, and supplies brochures and maps. This provides a single point of contact for information about island activities, cultural sites and events when planning your own day.
