Öjebyn: Church Town, Culture and Cycling Route
Accommodation in Öjebyn
Öjeby kyrkstad as a Cultural Centre
Öjeby kyrkstad is protected as a cultural environment of national heritage interest. The church town therefore brings together more than individual sights; it also tells the story of the development of a historic place.
Construction of Öjeby Church began around 1500. In the 18th century, it was converted into the cruciform church seen today. Next to the church stands a freestanding bell tower, which is considered to be older than the church. The church also contains a valuable antependium from 1589. These details make a visit particularly interesting if you want to explore sacred architectural history not just through a single year of construction, but across several periods.
Trade History and Historic Buildings
Öjeby kyrkstad was a well-known medieval trading centre and laid the foundation for the founding of the town of Piteå in 1621. The historical importance of the site is therefore evident both in the church and in its former role as a meeting place and marketplace. A specific example of its later architectural history is Visningsstuga No. 28, which dates from 1804.
The spatial development of the church town is also part of its history. The old coastal road runs through Öjebyn and continues through the church town.
Summer Walks and Museum
If you would like to experience Öjeby kyrkstad with additional context, guided walks are offered during the summer. Gammelgården, a museum in Öjeby kyrkstad with an exhibition about the history of the church town, is also open during the summer. This provides two different ways of exploring the local history: the guided walk presents the church town on foot, while the exhibition examines its development in a museum setting.
For a break, S:t Mary Kyrkstadscafé is located in the centre of Öjeby kyrkstad. Homemade pastries and coffee are served there. The café complements the cultural and historical visit with a convenient place to stop within the church town, so you do not have to leave the site's historic focus.
Explore Öjebyn by Bicycle
An active way to get to know Öjebyn is the “Öjebyn runt” cycling route. Most of the route follows cycle paths. On this loop, you can visit Öjeby kyrkstad and Öjeby Church in Öjebyn. For your travel planning, the route combines exercise with local history: rather than choosing between different sights, you can include both cultural sites in a cycling tour.
Öjeby kyrkstad is located approximately 5 km north of Piteå along the E4. If you would like to compare other destinations in the same destination area, you can also include Granliden (Granliden) in your research. The buildings in Öjeby kyrkstad developed largely organically along the access roads from the surrounding villages, which converge in the area around the church.
