Pajala: Church, River and Cultural History
Accommodation in Pajala
The Torne River flows through Pajala centralort. Pajala Church is located by the river; a riverside promenade was created in Pajala kyrkby to make the riverbank accessible. This brings the waterside setting and local history together as practical perspectives for planning your trip. If you are interested in cultural history, the church, the Laestadiusmuseet och pörtet complex and the Pajala market offer different themes: architectural history, historical objects and a market tradition.
The Church and Laestadius History
Pajala Church was built in Kengis in 1797 as a workers’ church, then moved to Pajala and remodelled in 1869–1871. Provost Laestadius preached there from 1849 to 1860. The dates serve different purposes: 1797 marks its construction, 1849–1860 the period when Laestadius preached, and 1869–1871 the remodelling; the move to Pajala is another step in its history.
The “Laestadiusmuseet och pörtet” complex consists of the vicarage, the pörtet and an herb garden. It contains many original objects documenting the time when Lars Levi Laestadius and Brita-Kajsa lived there. This provides a different cultural-historical focus from the church’s architectural chronology: here, the objects and the period in which the two lived there take centre stage. When planning your trip, you can thus consider architectural history and historical figures as different ways of exploring local history.
Guided tours of Laestadiuspörtet can be booked through the Pajala parish office. If a guided tour is part of your plans, confirm booking options before your trip.
The Market and Finding Your Way Around the Municipality
The Pajala market has its roots in the 18th century and is Norrbotten’s largest summer market. This event tradition complements the history of the church and the Laestadius complex. If you are planning your trip around the market, check the event dates in advance. The Pajala market dates back to the 18th century; the construction of Pajala Church in 1797 also falls within this period.
For information beyond the town, the Visit Pajala information centre at Soltorget provides tourists and residents with information about, for example, places to visit in Pajala Municipality. Naturkartan offers an additional overview for exploring the municipality: you can find places to visit, fishing lakes, snowmobile trails, ski trails and much more. The area covered is Pajala Municipality. Check local trail conditions before setting out.
The coverage and content of Naturkartan are updated continuously. If you are using the map to plan specific outings, check the current map content. Its categories help organise different interests: fishing lakes, snowmobile trails and ski trails are listed alongside general places to visit. This allows you to consider cultural attractions in town separately from potential destinations across the municipality when planning your trip.
