Sangis between the delta, hiking trail and sandy beach

Sangis combines a rural setting with a river landscape, hiking trails and traces of cultural history. The village is located on a delta of fine sediments and sand. The Sangisälven flows through Sangis and empties into Sangisfjärden south of the village. This gives Sangis different starting points for your trip: you can explore a long hiking trail, plan activities on the river, learn about the history of the village or visit a sandy beach in the surrounding area.

Hiking along the Skridfinnarleden

The Skridfinnarleden is an 82-kilometre hiking and tourist trail between Sangis and Överkalix. It makes Sangis appealing to travellers who want to combine the village with a longer route. In addition, Sangis has an approximately three-kilometre illuminated trail. It starts at Ängsvallen. The two options therefore already differ in their documented length and layout: the Skridfinnarleden runs between two villages, while the illuminated trail starts in Sangis. It remains focused on Sangis and complements the inter-village trail with a shorter option.

River, paddling and seasonal activities

The Sangisälven is an important part of the local landscape. The river offers good opportunities for fishing and paddling. Boat trips on the Sangisälven are possible in summer. In winter, snowmobile tours or skiing are possible there. Which of these experiences suits your trip therefore also depends on whether you would like to visit Sangis during the warmer or colder season. The river landscape also extends to Sangisfjärden, into which the Sangisälven flows south of Sangis.

Forests, agriculture and sandy beach

Sangis is an agriculturally oriented village. The forest areas near the village offer opportunities for berry picking. Sangis havsbad, a sandy beach in Haparanda Municipality, is located around 7–8 kilometres southeast of Sangis. This means that your travel plans can combine a stay in the village with a trip to a beach without equating the two landscapes.

Church, museum and Viking Age burial mound

Sangis also has several distinct points of cultural and historical interest. Sangis kyrka is a church from the 1950s. The Kvarngården Museum is located on the Sangisälven and is a popular destination for locals and tourists. Buildings of cultural and historical value can be found throughout Sangis.

Sangishögen is a Viking Age burial mound dating from 800 to 1050 AD. An examination uncovered, among other things, parts of a human skeleton, a sword and a shield boss. In addition to the river and landscape, these finds give the village a historical dimension that clearly differs from its natural attractions.
