Keitele combines options for active days with nature trails and public art. At Ystävyyden Elämyspuisto, you can choose from mini golf, a skatepark, a play area and outdoor fitness. There are also trails and places in the surrounding area where water, landscapes and activity play a part. You can tailor your stay to whether you prefer to be active, discover activities with children, or learn about Keitele through its history and art.

Recreation at Ystävyyden Elämyspuisto

The mini golf course at Ystävyyden Elämyspuisto has nine holes. There is also a skatepark, which skateboarders, scooter riders, inline skaters doing tricks and BMX riders can use. Younger visitors can enjoy a children’s play area with a giant trampoline and a zip line. An outdoor fitness area adds another option for exercise. If you’d like to include a range of recreational interests in your day, you’ll find several different activities in one place, from mini golf and the skatepark to the play and fitness areas.

Puupolku and digital tours

Puupolku is an outdoor trail that runs through the built-up area of Keitele. Its digital content covers wood, forests, jobs in the wood industry and the environment. Some stops also have mailboxes containing paper activities, including activities for younger children. The trail combines topics related to forests and wood with the opportunity to complete activities along the way.

Another way to discover Keitele is Keiteleen Kylänraitti: this AR-supported mobile tour runs along Äyräpääntie and explores the area’s history, present and future. Signs at the stops explain how to access the digital content; the tour can be used with a smartphone and the Salmi-AR app. Puupolku and Kylänraitti have different focuses: one covers topics including wood and forests, while the mobile tour explores Keitele’s development.

Water and trails in the surrounding area

Lossisaari, in the area around Keitele, has a sandy beach and a diving tower with platforms at heights of one and three metres. The café-restaurant and fuel station on Lossisaari serve boaters. If you’d rather go for a walk or a jog than spend time at the beach, you can enjoy the local nature and walking trail for relaxation, taking in the scenery and getting some exercise. The nature trail on Lossisaari is 1.7 kilometres long; along its shore are fishing spots as well as barbecue huts, shelters and campfire sites.

The Leppäselkä outdoor trail is also in the area around Keitele. It is 4.7 kilometres long and has a shelter with a campfire site. In winter, there are well-maintained cross-country ski trails at Leppäselkä. They can be reached from the outdoor trail’s car park or by taking a longer route from Keitele’s built-up area via the sports field. The season is therefore also a factor when choosing between the trails: the Leppäselkä outdoor trail and its shelter offer a different kind of visit from the ski trails available there in winter.

Hetejärvi is a protected bird habitat about six kilometres from the centre of Keitele. The cycling route there passes through rural landscapes and partly follows a road through a peatland area. This is an option for travellers who want to combine nature observation with a bike ride; the protected status of the wetland gives this destination a different focus from the recreational activities in town.

Art and history in town

Rajakivi is a protected archaeological monument in Pappilanranta, on the shore of Lake Nilakka. It is located in the shore park at Äyräpääntie 8–9. On Keitele’s market square and in the nearby park are community art stones created in 2019, the municipality’s 140th anniversary year. The Ystävyydenpuisto park is also home to “Tarinakehä,” a collaborative work by Iida Eija Tilles from 2024. It was created as part of the Kyläraittien taidemuseo project. These places offer different ways to explore Keitele through its archaeological heritage and collaborative artworks.

Other places in the same overview: Arvaja, Pyhäjärvi, Liminka, Alastalo, Kärsämäki, Veteli, Hyytiälä and Vieremä.
