In the Nallikari area on the Gulf of Bothnia, winter activities on the sea ice are among the possibilities: you can walk, ski or snowshoe there. Oulu also offers a cultural side to the city and an extensive network of walking and cycling routes. Those planning a stay can take in nature and outdoor activities, as well as islands, theatre and historic sites.

Cycling Routes, Islands and Coastal Landscapes

Oulu has a network of more than 900 kilometres of walking and cycling routes, which are maintained year-round. The longest main route in the cycling network runs for 38 kilometres from the city centre. Cycling routes can be accessed directly from Kauppatori Market Square, among other places. This information gives cycling visitors practical guidance: the market square is a named access point, and the main route is an example of a longer stretch in the network.

Hietasaari near Nallikari offers a distinctive landscape. Formed by land uplift, this coastal area encompasses various coastal vegetation zones, meadows and forests; its character also includes a rich diversity of birdlife. The area offers trails that can be used year-round, a birdwatching tower and campfire sites. Those particularly interested in observing nature will therefore find not only trails there, but also the tower as a specific point of interest.

Hietasaari’s longest nature trail starts in Nallikari and passes the Loistokari Platform, a campfire site and the Rantakurvi birdwatching tower. In winter, walking, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing on the sea ice are also possible in the Nallikari area on the Gulf of Bothnia. These seasonal activities differ from the year-round trails in Hietasaari, giving trip planning a different focus on nature and outdoor activities depending on the season.

Hupisaari City Park is also shaped by water and greenery: numerous small islands lie in the Oulujoki River delta and are connected by white bridges. Landscaped parks alternate with largely natural meadows and wooded areas. Hupisaari Park is also home to Finland’s longest fish ladder and the only fish ladder on the Oulujoki River. Migratory fish can be observed there from May to the end of October.

Cultural Sites and City History

Oulu’s cultural landmarks include the cathedral, which is part of the Oulujoki Pilgrimage Route. In front of the market hall stands the 2.2-metre-high bronze statue of the Market Square Policeman. Over the years, it has become a symbol of the city. The Castle Cellar also tells a story of Oulu’s past: it is the only surviving part of Oulu Castle and offers a glimpse into the city’s medieval history. Tähtitorni Café has operated as a summer café since 1912, on the renovated foundations of the castle, which was destroyed in 1793.

The performing arts programme takes various forms. The Oulu Theatre’s programme includes musicals, drama, contemporary theatre, dance, stand-up comedy, circus performances and drag shows. Hupisaari Summer Theatre offers residents of the region and visitors a varied programme of performing arts. For families, the Kotilo Children’s Cultural Centre in Saari Central Library in the city centre offers a diverse and changing range of cultural experiences.

At the Turkansaari Open-Air Museum, visitors can learn about the region’s ways of life, traditional skills and beliefs in buildings on islands in the Oulujoki River. Pikisaari Island is home to numerous original wooden houses from the 18th and 19th centuries. To see the island from the water, there is a 2.5-kilometre paddling route around Pikisaari. The island is known for its artists and craftspeople.

Market Square and Local Produce

Oulu Market Square offers local products. The market hall features a range of local delicacies and products to take away. Together with the statue in front of the hall, the square is both a place to find regional products and a prominent landmark in the cityscape.

Other destinations include Pyhäjärvi, Hailuoto, Hankamäki, Möttönen, Vieremä, Ii and Merijärvi.
