Sulsted – Church Art, Mindejorden and History
Church Art and Historical Layers
Sulsted Church is a Romanesque church whose oldest section was built from hewn granite stones. Its frescoes are particularly distinctive: created in 1548, they form a cohesive composition of 22 narrative scenes from the life and death of Jesus, supplemented by Bible texts in Danish. The paintings were never whitewashed over. The Romanesque fabric of the building and the sequence of images created in 1548 thus represent two different periods; the Danish Bible texts add a linguistic layer to the scenes. Sulsted Cemetery also has a 350-square-metre perennial bed; the redesign of the cemetery is ongoing. Hammer Church is also located in the immediate vicinity of Sulsted, a sight classified as a church.
At Sønder Elkær stands the main building that is still standing today, commissioned by the owner at the time, Harald Branth, after the fire of 1887. It consists of a single-storey main wing and a single-storey western side wing in the Neo-Gothic style, built of red brick, with crenellated gables and a continuous front gable. After the fire, a garden and a park of about 10 Tønder Land were also laid out on the former castle site. At Sønder Elkær, an older half-timbered oak building stood on the foundations of an even older medieval castle courtyard made of brick on a fieldstone base. The sequence of structures extends from the medieval castle courtyard through the oak half-timbered building to the present building erected after the fire of 1887. The garden and park of about 10 Tønder Land complement this historical sequence with the landscaping of the former castle site.
