Brønderslev: Jyske Ås, Nature and Culture

Jyske Ås is a ridge more than two kilometres wide, formed by glacial processes during the last ice age, stretching 38 kilometres from Dronninglund to Østervrå. Along this landscape, fields, heathlands, bogs and forests alternate; at the same time, the area is characterised by a rich variety of animal and plant life.

Nature

Jyske Ås has signposted hiking and cycling routes as well as primitive campsites. In Brønderslev Municipality, ten signposted nature and interpretation trails are also spread across the municipal area. Dronninglund Storskov covers 961 hectares. There, you can hike, cycle and ride on a signposted horse-riding route if you purchase a riding pass.

At Sømosen, there is a car park, a circular path, and tables and benches for a picnic break. Store Vildmose is a protected 450-hectare remnant of a former raised bog that was once considered the largest raised bog in Europe. In this area, you can hike and cycle as well as visit the regional and visitor centre Vildmoseporten. The rich birdlife of Store Vildmose can be observed from a Naturstyrelsen observation tower on Manna Mosevej.

Culture and History

The Museum for Forsyning og Bæredygtighed is a state-recognised cultural history museum that tells the story of life in Vildmosen and on Jyske Ås. Møllegård Village presents changing exhibitions on regional history and offers, among other things, lectures, holiday activities for children and the Hestedag throughout the year.

Voergaard Castle features a dungeon, a moat and the story of the bloodstain that cannot be washed away. During the Medieval Days, traders, impressive craftsmanship and fire pits bring the entire castle grounds to life.

Dronninglund Kunstcenter offers changing art experiences, an appealing gallery shop and a small café. It is situated in a beautiful natural area near Dronninglund Storskov.

Rhododendronparken comprises more than 10,000 plants in 130 varieties. Numerous events are held every year at the Runde Pavillon, including concerts and summer evenings with dancing. Rhododendronparken is accessible to wheelchairs and prams. Eventyrstien in Dronninglund Naturpark features sculptures and offers audio experiences via QR codes.

Hjallerup Mekaniske Museum presents the development of the mechanisation of agriculture and the arrival of industry in Denmark during the 20th century. Psykiatrihistorisk Museum takes visitors through history from the earliest prehistory, through the Middle Ages and the Enlightenment, to the era of state psychiatric healthcare and more recent times.

Egnssamlingen for Østvendsyssel holds its annual Høstdagen as an established tradition. Egnssamlingen for Østvendsyssel presents the history of Østvendsyssel from the Stone Age to the middle of the 20th century.

Harbour, Beach and More Experiences

The harbour of Asaa is now primarily used as a marina; from there, you can set out on fishing trips. Asaa Beach has carried the Blue Flag for many years.

Nygårdsminde Parkgolf has three smaller courses, known as loops, with nine holes each. Nygårdsminde Vingård offers tours of the vineyards followed by wine tasting and has 2,500 organically certified vines on two hectares.
