Bunken between dunes, beach and nature

The Bunken Dune Plantation lies between the Skagerrak coast and the Kattegat coast. For a stay in Bunken, this landscape offers a combination of forest, dunes and open areas. It is therefore particularly suitable as a starting point for travellers who want to combine nature experiences, the beach and paths through a varied coastal landscape.

Dunes, forest and open areas

The Bunken Dune Plantation covers 1,171 hectares and combines forest, dunes and open nature. The establishment of the dune plantation began in 1887. A prominent feature is Råbjerg Mile, which is part of the Bunken Dune Plantation. It is considered Denmark’s largest migrating dune. Råbjerg Mile is approximately 1,000 metres in each direction, contains around 3.5 million cubic metres of sand and is up to 40 metres high. Anyone who wants to experience the scale of a shifting dune landscape will find a particularly impressive natural setting here.

Beach access and designated bathing spot

Bunken Beach can be reached from the car park via an approximately 150-metre-long footpath through the dune heath. The beach is designated as a bathing beach and offers sheltered spots between the dunes. The nearby Hulsig–Bunken beach, which is car-free, is also located in the wider coastal landscape. These two details help put a day at the beach into context without reducing the coast to a single type of use.

Hiking trails with specific points of interest

The marked North Sea Trail runs through the open nature west of Råbjerg Mile and through the Bunken Dune Plantation. At Milevejen, there is drinking water and a basic overnight site along the North Sea Trail. The West Coast Trail also passes through the landscape: it goes by a rest area north of Lillesø, where there is a barbecue area. The trails therefore bring together nature observation, longer walks and practical opportunities to take a break.

Railway halt and viewpoint

Bunken Trinbræt is a halt on the Skagensbanen, local railway line 79 between Frederikshavn and Skagen. At the same time, it is a good starting point for walks in the Bunken Dune Plantation. Another marked trail station is the Flagbakken viewpoint, which the Blue Route passes. For orientation, the railway halt, hiking trail and viewpoint can therefore be considered different points of access in Bunken.

A natural area for different interests

In the Kirstens Rende area lies Døde Skov, a 44-hectare off-leash dog forest. Dogs are welcome there without a leash. West of the main road near Råbjerg Mile and Hulsig Hede, there is also a large Natura 2000 habitat area. These places expand the nature theme with a designated area for dogs and a large-scale habitat area.

History in the dune plantation and coastal waters

The Ålbækbugt Battery near Fårebakke in the Bunken Dune Plantation was a Second World War defence installation with 13 concrete bunkers. There is a maritime historical connection in the nearby waters in front of the campsite: the shipwreck Cronborg, a naval frigate that sank there in 1780, lies there. Bunken thus combines nature trails and coastal landscapes with visible traces of regional and maritime history.
