Kvissel between railway history and nature

Kvissel combines the town’s railway history, ecclesiastical architecture, cycle paths and the Åsted Å. Railways, architectural heritage and local history

The cultural environment of Kvissel encompasses the town of Kvissel and the old farms south of the town. The Kvissel station building was designed by N.P.C. Holsøe and entered service in 1877. Here, you therefore encounter a tangible example of railway architecture.

Kvissel Bro is a listed railway bridge over the Ã…sted Ã…; a 100-metre-wide protection zone was designated around the bridge. The combination of bridge construction and river landscape is therefore one of the prominent themes around Kvissel.

Kvissel Church was built in 1919, after the construction of the railway line from Hjørring to Frederikshavn in 1871 encouraged the development of a village at this location. It was inspired by medieval village churches; this is evident, among other things, in the stepped crenellations and the decorative wall niches on the upper part of the gables. The Old Station serves as the town’s creative house.

Cycling and routes

Cyclists have two options in Kvissel with different surfaces: on Route 62, you can continue along paved roads, while the scenic Grøn Tur partly follows gravel paths. The choice of route is therefore not only a question of direction for you, but also of your preferred surface.

Several walking and cycling paths now run along the North Jutland railway lines from Kvissel via Frederikshavn towards Skagen. Grøn Tur is an approximately 60-kilometre cycling route through the particularly scenic natural surroundings around Frederikshavn. Only the continuously connected Grøn Tur is signposted.

Landscape and Ã…sted Ã…

Kvissel lies on the edge of a former stone sea that once formed the northern boundary of Vendsyssel. The nature theme thus extends from a geological past to seasonal fish stocks. Especially towards the end of the season, the Åsted Å is home to sea trout as well as a smaller stock of brown trout that can be caught. Between Kvissel and Ravnshøj, the Åsted Å is more accessible at several points.
