Vadstena – Abbey Church, Castle and Paths by Lake Vättern

Vadstena combines medieval urban history, pilgrimage traditions and experiences on Lake Vättern. Medieval Townscape and Swedish History

Much of Vadstena’s town centre retains its medieval street network. On a self-guided walk, you can discover historic buildings on foot and explore the town in your own order. A prominent testament to Swedish history is Vadstena Castle: Gustav Vasa had it built in the 16th century as part of Sweden’s fortification system. Abbey Church and Pilgrimage Tradition

Vadstena Abbey Church was consecrated on 16 February 1430 after approximately 60 years of construction. It is one of Europe’s most important pilgrimage destinations and is open every day year-round. The Saint Birgitta Ways are pilgrimage routes leading to Vadstena, making the town interesting for visitors who wish to combine their trip with a spiritual or historical route theme.

The Pilgrimscentrum offers pilgrimage information, a café and a shop. It also has a hostel where visitors can receive a stamp and a Birgitta certificate. The centre organises courses, hikes, retreats and seminars. Groups can book guided visits to the Sancta Birgitta Abbey Museum year-round, including outside regular opening hours. The museum experience therefore differs considerably depending on the form of travel from an individual walk through the town.

Hiking and Activities on Lake Vättern

The Borghamn–Vadstena section of the Östgötaleden combines landscape and culture. The trail leads from the former fishing village of Borghamn across the plain to the medieval town of Vadstena and its abbey church. The route thus provides a specific approach to the town in which the trail itself forms part of the experience.
