Lindi between Bog, Harbor and Manor History

Those looking for a combination of protected bog landscape, coastal village and rural history on their trip will find several different points of interest in Lindi. Lindi Bog and picturesque islets form the center of the 11,000-hectare Lindi Nature Reserve in the area surrounding the village. A viewing tower beside the road offers views of the nature reserve. At the same time, Lindi preserves traces of its manor and village history, which can be combined with nature experiences and regional cuisine during a stay.

Nature Experience in Lindi Bog

The bog shapes the character of the surrounding area. Visitors can walk there as long as they do not damage the sensitive landscape. In the southern part, bilberries and cranberries grow abundantly in autumn; there are also many mushrooms. The seasonal character of this area makes it particularly interesting for travelers who want not only to observe a quiet landscape, but also to experience its characteristic plants and fruits.

A guided snowshoe tour leads through Lindi Bog and between the bog pools. It then continues to a viewing tower overlooking the bog landscape. This clearly distinguishes it from an independent walk: The tour combines the route through the bog with a subsequent viewpoint and takes place as a guided experience. For regional context, the landscape between Lindi and Tõstamaa extends beyond the immediate bog. It follows an old coastal dune ridge and lies entirely within Kihnu väina merepark, the Kihnu Strait Marine Park.

Village History around the School and Manor

The Lindi Manor and the village of Lindi initially formed an independent community. It was not until 1860 that they were merged with Audru to form a municipality. The place name also refers to the history of ownership: The Estonian name Lindi derives from the Linten family, who were among the interim owners of Woldenhof Manor.

A specific historical landmark is Lindi's old schoolhouse, built in 1927. Three linden trees of impressive proportions stand beside the building. They are estimated to be around 480 years old. One of these lindens is 36.5 meters tall and has a trunk circumference of 7.30 meters. The site therefore tells not only the story of the village school, but also makes the long development of the cultural landscape visible, without requiring a large museum complex.

Activities, Harbor and Estonian Cuisine

Lindi Disc Golf Park is located in the village by the Lindi school. This makes it a separate leisure attraction directly connected with the historic schoolhouse. Events are also part of the village's local history and present: At Lindi Jaanituli 2024, live music and games for children and adults were part of the program. The children's holiday camp series “Suvekool Lindil” had already been held for 11 years.

Lindi Harbor conveys an authentic coastal-village atmosphere to visitors. A culinary point of interest is Vana Kooli Kohvik in the former Lindi Manor, where traditional Estonian dishes are served in a community center. The cuisine brings together the seasons, local ingredients and the distinctive character of nature. In Lindi, historic buildings, harbor atmosphere, bog landscape and regional cuisine therefore do not represent the same experience, but rather different facets of the village.
