Piirumi between coastal meadows and the sea

Piirumi is located in a particularly distinctive coastal and natural landscape in southwestern Estonia. The Luitemaa Nature Reserve encompasses the village and gives the area a clear connection to protected landscapes and natural habitats. Here, the coast is more than just the edge of the sea: coastal meadows and the communities of protected areas also shape the surroundings. Around the village, protected coastal meadows meet birdwatching towers at ponds and on the beach; Luitemaa provides the shared landscape setting. For visitors who want to combine nature experiences with sea views on Estonia’s Baltic coast, this landscape character is part of the stay.

In the Piirumi special management zone, the preservation of semi-natural communities is just as important as the protection of coastal habitats and rare species. The coastal meadow habitat type 1630* was recorded there in 2014. The coastal meadows complement the seashore with a distinct landscape area of their own, where protected communities and rare species are among the conservation objectives. Piirumi is therefore shaped not only by the open sea, but also by the special areas behind the coast.

Birdwatching and coastal views at Pikla

The nature experience becomes especially tangible at the Pikla ponds in the Luitemaa Nature Reserve. There are two birdwatching towers: one is located between the ponds, while the other is lower and stands on the beach. The proximity of the ponds and the beach combines birdwatching with several types of landscape in one place.

The towers at the Pikla ponds offer views of the coastal meadow and the sea. At the same time, both towers are located in the Luitemaa Nature Reserve, which protects the coastal and natural landscape of southwestern Estonia. Near the village of Piirumi in Häädemeeste Parish, there is also the Pikla coastal viewing platform. Unlike the towers at the ponds, it is located close to the village. The platform is near Piirumi, while the two towers have different locations in the Luitemaa protected area, at the ponds and on the beach.

Accommodation and farms near the coast

Pikla Linnumaja is located directly by the sea in the Luitemaa Nature Reserve. The accommodation is therefore situated in the same protected coastal landscape as the Pikla ponds and birdwatching towers. Here, the sea and the nature reserve are directly connected; its location is therefore clearly different from the road-side setting of Nurka Farm.

Nurka Farm is located at kilometre 157 of the Tallinn–Riga highway, 30 km from Pärnu in the direction of Riga. The more than 100-year-old Nurka Farm complex was converted into a modern holiday farm over a period of six years. The conversion combines the historic farm buildings with their use as a modern holiday farm.

Piirumi and Tahkuranna

Another destination at the same higher level is Tahkuranna. Within this regional context, Piirumi represents a place where the village lies in the Luitemaa Nature Reserve, and ponds, beach, coastal meadows, and the sea define the landscape.
