Undva combines a strong connection to nature at the cape with traces of a long history of settlement. The village is subject to the conservation regulations of Vilsandi National Park. They were approved on 17 March 2023 and came into force on 1 April 2023. The two dates mark distinct steps: approval of the regulations and their entry into force. The history of the village thus brings together a protected landscape, archaeological evidence, and a maritime past.

Birdlife at Cape Undva

Cape Undva is one of the wintering grounds of the Steller’s eider. The cape is considered the most visited place for observing this species, including by birdwatchers from many other countries. If nature observation is a priority, you can take this seasonal connection into account when deciding to visit Undva.

Settlement and Cultural Landscape

A Stone Age settlement site is located in the village of Undva. Undva is also home to the region’s oldest known settlement site. The village also has old fields. Within the protected area, the cultural landscape shaped by human use is best preserved in the villages of Undva and Kõruse. Comparing Undva with Kõruse shifts the focus from an individual archaeological site to a landscape shaped by human use. The term cultural landscape makes this connection clear: here, it encompasses both traces of settlement and the use of the land.

Lighthouse and Coastal History

The history of the lighthouses follows a clear sequence: after Kiipsaare Lighthouse was completed, the light at Undva Lighthouse was extinguished; the structure was demolished in 1937. A local tradition tells that Suur Tõll drove the wolves at Cape Undva into the sea, giving rise to the name. The legend offers a different kind of local history from events associated with specific years: it passes down an explanation of the name, while the history of the lighthouse and military can be placed in a specific chronology. In 1941, a coastal battery with four 130 mm guns was located in Undva. The concrete gun emplacements and the bolt circles used to secure the guns are relatively well preserved.

Cultural Landscape in the Wider Region

In the wider region, part of the Tagamõisa hoiuala conservation area and adjacent land were incorporated into Vilsandi National Park. The aim was to preserve the cultural landscape there in a more holistic way. This gives the regional context of the landscape a place alongside Undva’s archaeological and maritime themes.

Nature and Historical Layers

Cape Undva is one of the wintering grounds of the Steller’s eider; the area’s history, by contrast, spans from Stone Age settlement to the events of 1937 and 1941. If you want to plan your travel dates around your interest in nature, this offers a clear seasonal reference point; if you are more interested in history, you will find several historical perspectives.
